I was reading how they had killed Abu Bakr al-Baghdadiand had been able to identify him with instant DNA because his body was so mutilated.

So is instant DNA a thing now days or would it have been a specific thing used to test against this guy.

With the right lab, technique, and quality samples, the actual testing can be really quick. In most cases any delay (e.g. with home testing kits) is due to types of equipment/process used and quantity of jobs to get through. Also, accuracy of desired results can have an impact.

In the field though ??, the way they were making it out is it was done on scene.

Would be pretty cool if they could, when it comes to military tech who knows what they are able to do now days.

Reports based on what was available in 2015 suggest that instant means "less than 2 hrs". The US military had comparison DNA from family members.
