At home, we realise as a small family there's no meaningful impact we can have, but still want to do something.

So we have bought steel straws.

We wash recyclables in the dishwater after washing the dishes.

Buy in bulk as much as possible.

Take our own fruit/vege bags to the supermarket for produce.

Collect food scraps for the green bin (We're in CHCH which helps) and throw bread scraps to the birds.

Employ a strict catch and release policy for insects and spiders.

Ensure we host a variety of spiders in the backyard and never remove webs unless they're where we regularly walk.

Anything other ideas out there to help do your part?

Find a friend with chickens and take your food scraps to them, they can then recycle the scraps into eggs and you share .. saves a truckload on egg money at the supermarket.

(We have 10 chickens .. currently get an average of 7 eggs a day from them ... can be hard to keep up with eating them :-)

Hate to be that guy but ...

What is the point of metal straws, wouldn't a better option be no straws?

Also don't feed birds bread, it isn't good for them

Food scraps generally go into one or other of the various animals (we have dogs, chickens, cows, goat and alpacas to choose from, so most things will go in someone!)

Meridian supplies our electricity

We have well over 1000 trees to soak up our carbon

We do not burn wood to heat the house, reducing air pollution and its effect on human beings.

Biodegradable corn starch bin bags

House water supply is from rain

It was a suggestion to the OP ... I have my own chickens that live a mere 2 minute walk from my back door, the OP could walk or cycle or drive or fly, I've no idea where his friends with chickens live :)

Thank you for the info - in regards to straws, the kids love them for getting the left-over milk from the bottom of the bowl in the morning and it's a lot less risk of spilling!!

My wife and I making a conscious decision not to have children, despite (gentle) family pressure.  There are too many people on this rock already.

Growing our own fruit and veges and fertilizing with our own compost. We chip and mulch larger green waste eg tree and shrub trimmings and use the mulch etc to reduce the need for watering. Use natural pest remedies to reduce impact of Bees and other useful insects. Use an electric lawn mower. Recycle as much as we can. We went down to one motor vehicle which is a Hybrid.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I forgot bees.

We have 24 hives on the property at the moment. That would be as many as 1.5 million bees.
