A story in NZ Herald today about recent thunderstorms showed this photo which is linked to Twitter. From time to time I’d like to be able to view the webpage where this image is shown - but I don’t and won’t use Twitter.

I have searched for it but can’t find anything. Doesn’t seem to be a Met Service thing - they show rain radar but not with lightning strikes. Does anyone know if/where this is available?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

There is a number of free Live Lightning Trackers for NZ, but the MetService one is via their industry system and then another subscription

Thanks - I was aware of all those sites and I believe they all source from Blitzortung. I have looked at Blitzortung for years when I’ve been in electrical storms in NZ and several other countries. IMO it’s pretty useless - I believe it only records cloud-to-ground strikes and not cloud-to-cloud (or vice versa). It certainly does not register at least half of the lightning flashes I have observed during storms.

I was interested in the Met Service map because it appears to show both c-g and c-c strikes - and I’m disappointed to hear that it’s only available by subscription.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Just an FYI the lightning detection equipment in NZ is actually owned by Transpower but operated by MetService for Transpower.

Just to clarify the CAP feed (which is awesome BTW) is publicly accessible and has warning/alerts of potential events including lightning but it doesn't have the actual lightning strike data.

Im not sure of what @eracode wants the data for, if its just in relation to the possible/likleyhood of lightning then the CAP feed would be fine. If @eracode wants the strike data then thats unlikely to be freely available.
