When this sort of stuff is going on, Im all for cops being armed to the teeth....... very sad

I hope they nail the *(&^@#()_*($@ to the wall. Put the guys in the pound with the other dogs....its all they deserve, not prison.

Yes, but some questions that crossed my mind. These officers were doing undercover work, in plainclothes, at 1:30am. They were caught by someone - if the person they were trying to track or not isn't clear. They started running. Did they identify themselves as police officers? Did the guy(s) following them know it wasn't a rival gang for example?

While killing someone, police officer or not, is certainly not what you'd want to see happen, if the officers had some visible identification would that end in a different way?

I would have thought there would have been better Police Surveilance at the same time and why was the AOS not already there or at least armed officers available nearby.
People gaurding P Labs are known to be very protective and unpredicatable.
They were trying to put a tracker device on a vehicle at the time apparently.
From a mentalk health point of view people onm P are very wired up and unpredictable

Edit: On reading the NZ Herald Article there were in fact armed Police nearby

Would have to agree with psychrn. Hopefully lessons will be learnt from this.

At the moment the police contract negotiations are going on. The police heirachy (AKA government) don't even want to offer 4% which would barely cover inflation. It's not suprising that so many experienced officers are leaving to go to better paying jobs or similar paying jobs with better working conditions.

The goverment promise of 1000 extra frontline police is also bull**** as well, a lot of the new "frontline" police are traffic cops or have desk jobs.

I know a lot of frontline staff have had a gutsfull of the government/police bosses and their attitudes and are also sick of getting beaten up by the media without any response from the commissioner defending his troops.

Days like this when a cop gets killed certainly makes you wonder why anyone would bother to sign up.

My own personal view is that I wouldn't want to carry firearms on my person, but the government have to get serious on hard core criminal offending/gangs to prevent the events of today being repeated.

Nothing wrong with a 3 strikes policy, commit 3 offences imprisonable by more than 2 years (serious assault/drug matters) and you get a minimum 10 year sentence.

Undercover work carries risks like this. They know the job and the increased risks when they sign up. However I'm very much surprised they are put into these dangerous situations without firearms. If these men could shoot back and were trained in urban combat they would have stood a much better chance.

My thoughts exactly. I watch too many US cop shows and movies but if you are plain clothes cop dont you yell out something to that effect and hold up your badge?

It was early morning and by the sounds of it the guys chased them in a car which also puzzled me why didnt these guys jump over someones fence and bang on a door or something like that? I guess the police thought this was run of the mill stuff and as reported it was not expected that occupants were violent and prone to using firearms. This will of course bring in new procedures and hopefully rather than fluff around trying to track 'em and gather evidence I say just go in with a bulldozer.

Condolences go out to family and friends and I am too hope that bad things happen to those responsible.
