I just encountered a new (to me) scam. It was a (very generic) robocall informing me that an unauthorised overseas transaction for a little over $1,000 had been detected on my Visa (or Mastercard) credit card. It told me to press 1 to proceed. Instead I waited to see if I would get a response by doing nothing and the call timed out and disconnected after a short time. I believe the new generation of scammers are employing self-selecting sucker mechanisms like this to weed out time wasters and focus on the gullible. I pass this on for whatever it may be worth.

That could have also been a genuine call from your bank. Naturally they cannot reveal much to whoever answers the phone without first identifying them. My recommendation is you contact your bank.

I'm sure it was a scam. My bank would have at least identified itself, which this call did not. Also, I only have a debit card, and it has less than a thousand dollars on it. If the bank really did honour the charge, it is their expense, not mine.

And yet banks still call people up and ask for personal information to "verify they're talking to the right person" and get all stupid behaving when you refuse to comply with their antics.

Privacy laws. A breach of those has serious consequences for a bank.

They also still send out emails, with clickable links in them too. As well as employ marketing companies to do surveys using different domains, that could easily be scam emails using a scam domain.

If a bank ever rings, I ask for the extension number, so I can phone them back via the banks 0800 number. That i the only way to be sure that you are speaking to someone from the bank, and it isn't a scam call. But prefer to use secure bank mail, as at least that shouldbe secure. A pity some banks are terrible and don't treat secure messaging with the same priority as a phone call, so can take days to reply or action something.

I just got the robocall, $1200 to be transferred overseas, or press 1 to get "instructions" to stop the transfer (to give them instructions to clean out the account of course).

Presumably spoofed caller ID was 6493090069.

A obvious flaw was to say it was my Visa or Mastercard. You'd think a bank would know.

They have an app they can message me thru. No reason for a phone call.

I've had 3 calls from Visa Mastercard re a $1200 unauthorized transaction from "overseas". Pressed 1 to toy with them but their faux-phone system is so rubbish the calls dropped.

Even if you find a branch, then the things a bank branch can't help you with with issues with CCs is amazing.
