Hi - does anyone have any good experiences with instant cappuccino sachets from Greggs, Moconna, Avalanche etc?

I'm looking for the closest approximation to a proper barista cappuccino or latte that these things can provide if that's at all possible - I am asking this because where I will be there is no nearby cafe and no fridge but there is hot/cold water.

There's a moccona one that's "extra strong" cappuccino that is better than a normal instant, but not close to a decent cuppa.

I've tried a few. Moccona if I had to choose. Nescafé second. Avalanche ok I find it a little strong and unpredictable for regular consumption. All of them the moccas are nice if you like mocca. It's the sweet spot of the instants because choc powder ingredient is same for barrista..

Aside from knowing nutrition info, I’ve found a Korean brand ‘Maxim’ to be pretty good for mocha. Not sure about cappuccino but they probably have those too.

Unlikely you’ll find them outside or Korean/Asian marts, search “Maxim mocha gold mild” to see what the boxes look like.

Confession:

I take some sachets of those with us when we're on holiday, I like the Nestle one best (even though I despise Nestle as a company), "strong" cappuccino - it's not really very strong. Some cafes do worse IMO - especially random ones in the sticks. It baffles me how they manage to when they have the right equipment etc, but never underestimate how when you've got a fool with a tool, the fool dominates the experience. Those "chemical cappuccinos" are at least consistently quite bad, so long as you follow the instructions so that the emulsifiers, stabilisers, flavourings etc disperse into a homogenous blend in the cup. If you don't stir it quickly enough, then globs of it congeal into lumps and stick to the back of your throat like dry weetbix or a blowfly.

If I have weight restrictions (eg. When hiking) then I’ll tend to mix moccona and milk powder - that way I only need to drop a bit in hot water and coffee.

With no weight restrictions, I’ll pre-grind coffee and take a French press/plunger. A moka pot would work too if you have a gas burner. (Tramping cookers work really well, as long as your not in the wind or a confined space.)

I drink lots of espresso during the day but in the morning I make a cup of café au lait with freeze-dried Moccona coffee but instead of making black coffee and adding hot milk I just disolve the granules directly on hot milk.

Again - it's café au lait, not cappuccino. Without proper espresso and milk frother, you won't ever get a cappuccino.

Don't be put off by the haters in here, I love me a good sachet coffee and no doubt tens or hundreds of thousands of others do otherwise they wouldn't be selling them let alone expanding the offerings.

From what research I've done none of them actually have caffeine in them so you're really just drinking for flavour or out of habit.

Avalanche seem to be the cheapest but I would avoid. Whatever lovely additives they add to their flavoured milk powder makes it mix very poorly (worse than the others at least) and you'll end up with clumps of powder floating on the top. Recommend you add a small amount of hot water and mix furiously before filling up the cup with all of them though.

I don't prefer any brand over the others, just whatever is on special.

Nescafe and Gregg's are just flavoured sugar sachets, and Avalanche is just dreadful. As mentioned, Moccona is the only one that approaches actual coffee.
