I see that Dicks Smiths are being D*cks and price gouging hand sanitisers and masks. Currently they are selling 20 P2 masks for $319!

Personally I am going to keep a list of companies doing this and never again leave a single cent with them.

Anyone see any other company doing this?

I went to the Mad Butcher today. All of the usual deals were not present. So not quite price gouging but more expensive than usual.

Noticed this with mince at Countdown as well (not part of the 3 for $20 deals).

Are supermarkets doing the same sorts of specials as they normally do?

No there were no specials at all at countdown so not sure what is going on there. We did our weekly shop for delivery and zero items were on special.

Just noted this from countdown.

Our stores are dealing with significantly increased demand and pressure to keep shelves stocked for customers. This needs to be our main focus, and as such we have made the decision not to proceed with any planned promotions for the next two weeks, and this includes our mailer.

Er I would say in Dick Smith's case its a bit like shooting the messenger. Their supplier would have hiked the price massively and they will be passing that on. You have the choice whether to buy at that price or not - some may, most will not.

Hopefully they will reduce pricing across the board to make up for it.

Supermarkets at the moment are struggling to keep up with the demand with many working many hours more then they usually do (I have a friend that only does usually about 15 hours a week and in the last week has done over 40+ hours).

Countdown having promotions on the moment would help increase this demand, resulting in them struggling at being able to keep up with the Promotions + Covid19 Demand.

The key issue I have heard is that the supermarkets are struggling to get stuff into their warehouses and out to their stores - the suppliers/manufactures are struggling themselves to keep up with the demand.

If people Didn't Panic Shop then Countdown would have had promotions like normal. Other supermarkets are having issues as well, yes they have promotions however I wouldn't be surprised if the next few weeks they don't (It was a last minute decision I heard Re Countdown cancelling all the promotions).

Put bluntly - Don't Panic Shop Folks

There is no point leaving it to people to do the right thing, because they haven't been doing it for weeks. I looks like they will be getting a lot tougher, because what people have done is put others at risk of not being able to get supplies their normal shopping supplies they need. I know someone who is wanting to get some staples delivered via online shopping , but it says it will be a week due to delays, and pickup is near the end of the week, but they don't want to pickup due to the risk group they are in.

Supermarkets are raking in the profits...i hope they are looking after their staff well.

Time to dispel a few myths here.

When you see an item in the supermarket that normally retails for $9.99 discounted or on promotion for say $6. The Supermarket themselves are not giving up any (or very little) of their own margin. The manufacturer is running the promotion in their store and gives up the margin, in return for higher volume of course. The manufacturer pays for everything (margin, promotional material, and even pays for  premium shelf space, page position in mailers).

Managing promotional activity in store carries a high overhead for both the manufacturer and the retailer. Its called trade spend in the business, and its big dollars. In any given year our trade spend is higher than our cost of goods!

What you're seeing now is the Supermarkets are not allowing manufacturers to run their promotional campaigns. And quite rightly too. The focus right now is on shelf availability for consumers and anything else is non essential.

The people we normally employ to manage our trade spend, are currently in your local Supermarket at 2am in the morning helping our retail partners to stock the shelves

Our local is looking after the community, not just staff. The manager is awesome and very community minded. She mentioned that yes, sales are good, but next week could be extremely low so it off sets.

You cant blame supermarkets for people going stupid and buying bulk when they don't need to.
