Hi

I am a doctor in general surgery at Wellington.

We need to change into hospital scrubs at work due to the risk of bringing covid-19 home to our families and we also wear them while operating. We often come into contact with body fluids as well. The hospital scrubs are laundered daily by the hospital.

There is now a hospital shortage of scrubs due to more staff wanting to wear scrubs during their time in the hospital as they don't want to bring their work clothes home.

We were asked today to provide our own clothes during ward work for when there are no scrubs available, and to bag our work clothes and shower then change to a different set of clothes on leaving the hospital. I'm hopeful the hospital would be doing something to source more garments, but sometimes things move slowly.

For our general surgical team we have 21 rmo and we are front line dealing with patients every single day. I wanted to try and organise 42 sets of scrubs to be made that we can use for our teams, 2 each.

If you could pass this one to anyone in the textiles or manufacturing/garment business it would be great.

Looking for a donation or significant discount as this is self funded and this is something that should be provided anyway to us all.

Thanks

If anyone can assist with this please get in touch.

eg. Give me email addresses for businesses that I can email this out to.

I'm very busy with organizing other things, during this busy time, so if GP army can help with contact addresses it would be great. I just emailed stuff to help, maybe they can just do a story.

Swazi are pretty famous in NZ you know! They design and make outdoor clothing, so have a bunch of big sewing machines and skilled operators they may be able to use to assist. They are based in Levin, north of Wellington.

The business name is Swazi and the address is www.swazi.co.nz which has all the contact details on.

Try this link, which should get you to a page where you can email the business owner directly.

Can not help you except give moral support and the suggestion to double that requirement for if & when MoH organises additional medical personal from their retirement pool.

Cheers, good luck and stay safe

Slightly off topic but FYI

From todays MoH 27/03/2020 @ 1300

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

There remains a lot of interest in supplies of personal protective equipment.

We are providing updated advice to health professionals around when and how to use PPE for dealing with COVID-19 to keep themselves safe. This will be on our website as draft today and finalised on Monday:

Part of that advice is about when health professionals don’t need to use PPE.  The advice also covers PPE for other essential workers – and about when that is required.

We have a national pandemic PPE stockpile and individual DHBs have their own dedicated supplies.

In the Ministry of Health national reserve and stores held in reserve by DHBs we have:

  • 1.9 million aprons and gowns
  • 2.7 million pairs of gloves
  • 60,000 sets of eye protection.

In addition, there are 18 million masks held in the national reserve and 5.1 million held in reserve by DHBs.

The Ministry is exploring all existing and a range of new avenues to ensure we maintain our stocks.

Our actions underpin the importance of protecting our health workers and those working in essential services have access to PPE.  It is already available for health workers and it’s important there is work to ensure a supply to essential workers.

The difficult we can do immediately. The impossible takes a bit longer. But Miracles you will have to wait for.
