Hi all,

I am loosely associated with a nearby lions club and they were planning on having a street collection for the club at some point and one of the members thought setting up a text donation number might be a good idea. I was wondering if anyone knew the process for doing this as lions isn't a charity from what I understand I was wondering if anyone knew the pitfalls and traps of doing something like this.

Here is my Quic referral https://account.quic.nz/refer/39513 if you are keen to change ISP and to get free setup (save $29). I will get a $50 credit if you use this.  Thank you very much if you use my link but I'm sure there are quite a few others who could share the same on here, no hard feelings if you use a different link.

Look at this Vodafone thread here: https://www.vodafone.co.nz/cms/documents/txt-fundraising-new-zealand.pdf

You might want to also have an online platform where donators can use their credit card, Apple/Google Pay and internet banking.

This information is good but it seems to be for charities and I am unfortunately not sure of Lions charitable status in this regard.

I can confirm, as an active Lion in NZ, that most Lions clubs in NZ operate as both an incorporated society and a charity.  As an incorporated society each Lions club offers membership and organises club meetings as well as fundraising activity.  As with other similar community service clubs the sense of achievement and purpose in belonging and fund-raising is why each club exists.  For the purposes of charitable registration, most clubs have an associated Trust.  The club and the Trust are legally separate but Trustees are appointed by the Club and usually consist of club officeholders (such as the Trerasurer, secretary and President).  When a club raises funds those funds go to their associated Trust.  The Trust is a registered charity.
