Hi GZ,

I am moving to a new house in the next 2 weeks. I am looking forward to replacing all the whiteware and furniture. Anyone has any recommendation on where is a good place to buy value products?

I think that depends on your definition of value? Are you after cheap and it doesnt have to last long? I don't mind paying a bit more to get better quality products which I value more. If you have a few things you want to buy go around some shops and ask them to do you a package deal

Buy it all at the same time, means it all breaks at the same time...

I agree with you. I am not after crazy cheap products. Can you name some shop that you feel like to recommend?

If you have the patience and time, I'd recommend doing some research first. Figure out what it is you want out of a particular piece of white-ware; power rating, accessories (ice), noise (fridge), lint catcher (washing machine) etc and go from there.

Furniture, do the bum and eye test.

I haven't bought brand new in a while but Smith City has good products when their on sale. Good microwave from there. Usually go Briscoes for the vacuums. That's about as far as my expertise goes. Everything else in my house is second-hand.

Furniture Zone seems to have competitive prices but I've yet to buy anything from them.

Thanks for your advice. BTW, where did you buy your second-hands?

There's a decent second-hand store here in Hamilton called 'Waikato Second Hand Centre'. Got a large Fisher and Paykel fridgefreezer and an unknown brand 3 seater couch for roughly $400 combined.

When we bought our Dishwasher last year, I shopped around like crazy, but ended up with amazing service and a good price from 100% in Albany.

I can't vouch for all of the 100% stores, but this one went above and beyond with service and price-matching as well as throwing in a few little freebies to sweeten the deal.

They were also really honest and knowledgeable with regards to their products.

If you want cheap, but seems to be pretty decent tradedepot.co.nz

The Midea range is Chinese, but they are a massive manufacturer.

We recently brought an oven from them - a vogue one - and I am incredibly impressed with it, and it was 1/2 the price of anywhere else I could find.

YMMV of course.

I have bought several items from tradedepot (a vogue oven and microwave, induction hob and a couple of bathroom sink units).

I agree that the items I bought are relatively well made and are good value for money, but be aware that their website stock levels are often wildly inaccurate (I've waited months and made many calls to them to get an "in-stock" item to be sent) and that as far as I can tell their warranty service is pretty much non-existent (the microwave display has always had a major glitch that doesn't stop it working but is annoying - they didn't reply to multiple emails about it, when I called they wanted me to send the full installation electrical certification before making a warranty claim, and after I did so they ignored all further communication).

This is probably not helped by my not being in Auckland or Christchurch where they have branches - if you can physically go in to complain or return faulty items hopefully these issues would be reduced.

just don't expect them to actually deliver.

We tried to go through them, were told 3-5 days which was no problem, 2 weeks later they still were "going to call"

Then when we told them to stick it, suddenly it had a delivery date on it, not that we were ever informed.

YMMV as always, but  i could never recommend that place again.

Understand the negative experiences with tradedepot. My in stock oven did take about 10 days to be delivered from chch which wasn't terrible to me.

I have brought several smaller things and delivery has been ok - about a week I guess. Can't speak to warranty.

You are probably right if you can get to the showroom life is easier.

For the price I was happy with the service and product.

Might be worth saying where you are @hhan.   I have a lounge suite I'm looking to get rid of....    ;-)

In Auckland, Magness Benrow score well in Consumer NZ's ratings, and we were pleased with the deal we got from them for a suite of appliances for an Auckland house we were doing up.
