Had to help out someone who fell victim to this scam this morning. Apparently there's a fake Countdown page on fb offering free iphones for $2. As soon as I saw it was obviously a Phishing scam used to get peoples debit/credit card info and the $2 is just to check if the card is valid. Had to cancel her debit card and get a new one. Like the old saying goes if its too good to be true it probably is. Just like all those fake KFC pages offering vouchers. Amazing how many people fall for this stuff.

This morning I received the email shown below. Very convincing at first look - especially when Mrs Code’s car is due for re-rego this week. However what immediately struck me as strange was the $79 price - I knew that wasn’t correct. Also it didn’t show the rego number, as the legit notices do.

What also made it tricky was that in Mail on iPad, the sender’s actual email address doesn’t seem to show up properly. It wasn’t until I looked at it on Spark’s Xtra page that I could see that the sender’s address was wacky - certainly not NZTA.

Still I think some people might be fooled by this because it looks fairly authentic.

I hardly touch FB anymore because of the number of scams. Removed myself from 90% of the groups etc I was attached to, has made it a lot tidier.....

With "reminder"emails, I never click links in them. I goto the website myself and log in.

There's lots of these, Facebook don't seem to care which is surprising at it affects their actual customers (advertisers) - have reported the ones I see but get same one a week later.  Saw a JB hi-fi one recently and there were literally thousands of people falling for it in the comments.
