I'm going to be out of town on election day, and after looking at the Vote.nz site, can see I can vote from the local township anyway on the day. That's fine, but when looking at the location maps, it mentioned Advanced Voting from the 3rd October - yet nowhere on the Vote.nz website does it say who/what makes a vote an advanced vote.

I've always been in town for election day for the past 20+ years so never bothered looking at options :)

Vote.nz does explain advanced voting; what you need to do is wait to receive your easyvote pack (assuming you have enrolled) in the mail and do what it says in there.

These packs are due any day now.

Go here to see a map of all the polling places, including those which offer advanced voting. We got our packs today and will probably go vote on Saturday to get it out of the way.

You don't need an easy vote pack to advance vote ( your easy vote card simply has the page and line number of your entry on the electoral role- so its easy for the booth staff to find and cross you off)

Advanced voting is just like normal voting except you do it beforehand, - they start to count advanced votes at 9am on election day, so its helps make the result eerier....

you will find that most of the locations where you can vote on election day will also offer advanced voting

While you can vote at any polling station outside of your electorate, you need to do so as a special vote - and they take a lot longer than casting a ‘normal’ ballot. First, the process is far more convoluted - forms to fill, envelopes to stuff - and second only a small proportion of election workers at any station are set up and trained to take special votes (in the station I managed for the previous three elections I was the only one taking them, and as a result could be significant).

TLDR - heaps easier to cast an advance vote in your electorate than a special vote on election day outside of your electorate!
