I am tracking an item from Amazon USA for delivery in Auckland and it has arrived in Sydney. Tracking info so far says ..

Package arrived at a carrier facility
Sydney, XX AU

Completed customs clearance process
Sydney, XX AU

Package has left the carrier facility
Sydney, XX AU

Is that normal?

Thanks.

COVID has pretty much bollocked up all global freight routes , that something is bouncing via Aust does not really seem suprising.

My last package was with UPS, it went via Sydney. Not surprising at all. So long as it says "arrives in Auckland" soon rather than "out for delivery in Sydney" you're fine.

International freight is still a nightmare at present with so few flights. My last Amazon package a few weeks ago spent from memory 5 days at LA with a message saying it was awaiting airfreight space. Air NZ are even further reducing flights between AKL & LAX to from 3x to 2x weekly (excluding special freight charter flights) for the Northern Hemisphere Winter which won't help things.

Transportation of goods both sea and air is still hugely disrupted, and it's going to be interesting to see how lots of retailers cope this summer. I was in Kmart yesterday and many categories in their store are wiped out with no stock, and I'm aware of one major NZ retailer worried about levels of stock for Xmas and what they'll do if it all arrives late.

No idea how it works. I got a big parcel from NY via LAX last week and it took a week. It was DHL Express and wasn't cheap, but it was the cheapest available. OTOH I'm still waiting for a small parcel from Aus sent 20th July, using a lot cheaper more ordinary mail. So big price difference but 9 weeks(ish) vs one and bit of a difference in distance / complexity as well.
