So Shortland street has graced our screens again for a new year. Yes I watch it and was bought into the fold by my wife.

Is it predictable - Yes

Anybody here watch it or is forced to.

Please be constructive if you reply and don't beat me with a large stick, it has been running for 29 years so must have something going for it.

I have occasional short phases. It's been a long time since I've watched FTA tv or even a major network on demand service. Local content is the advantage - The Luminaries was the last major series I tried and it was almost unwatchable for technical reasons. Looks like it's not available in 4K anywhere unfortunately.

All I know is Chris won’t die. Never does. It’s so sh*t, but I watch it anyway 😂

Went to the Shortland Street stage show at ASB theatre a few years ago. Was awesome. Not a pissstake, but more of a homage to the show. The stage show focussed on Episode 1 which was good as it's the only one I've seen. (Dr Ropata)

I loved the stage show version. Had a helicopter crash on stage too.

There was a show that launched at the same time in 1991 on TV3 but no one can remember it. Shorthand Street was made by TVNZ in a hurry to fight for ratings against the TV3 show that had been announced months before. Obviously another VHS vs Betacam style battle there....

Can anyone remember the name of the TV3 show...? It was based in a country location in south Auckland. Doing my head in trying to remember what it was called. May have starred Annie Whittle.

I don't watch it because it depicts deviant behaviour which has a normalising effect on society =P

In the early days, I watched a bit of it because the acting was so bad it was almost comedy.

I remember Homeward Bound and quite enjoyed it as light entertainment, but it was a total commercial failure.

I watched Shortland Street from 1994 to 2000 and probably my most distinct memory from that period was the 1994 car crash that killed Steve Mills and TP. I also remember the episode where the truck drove into the clinic reception - I think that was probably around 1995 or 1996.

Same. I have never watched more than three minutes of it ever, in total.

Ex is addicted to it to the point where after being away for a week, had to binge watch the entire week the second she walked in the door.  Unfortunately meant that I was subjected to having to be present while it was on.

It has to be the most tedious show ever with ridiculously bad acting and the most unrealistic yet predictable story lines.

Good on the actors who managed to use it to springboard their careers into something more fulfilling afterwards though.  Something good came from it for a number of them.  :-)

I watch it every now and then when I walk into the lounge as the other half watches it. I think the acting over the last few months is terrible Damo,s other half is probably the worst actress I have ever seen, the story lines seem to rinse and repeat every few years time to put down the lame horse it’s had it’s time

Used to, escapism, simple. Haven't for years and years. I haven't heard from friends and acquaintances in recent years about the annual HUGE drama that unfolded in the last December episode. But, ups to NZ for having an enduring Coro equivalent for so long.

Watched the first episode and thought it couldn't get worse.  It did so I didn't.

Didn't watch it until moving in with my partner 2 years ago as she watches it. Have grown to like it although some of the acting is a bit poor (especially whoever plays the Police characters when they appear), and the storylines a bit far fetched. Funny how it always seems to be the closest Hospital to any incident no matter where it happens. Thought the bach where the Christmas cliffhanger event happened was supposed to be a long way out of town, but still no Hospital closer...

Have watched it since it began. It’s more of a habit than anything. I can work out the storylines so easy I should be one of their scriptwriters
