I recently ordered these gas struts that are used to hold up the  hood on my BMW. I asked for sea shipping.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/143550899134

I've now been informed that the items are not safe to ship (by sea)

Unfortunately due to the unknown makeup of the items this cannot currently be sent to New Zealand using YouShop.

Please provide MSDS for the following items:

BOXI" GAS CHARGED LIFT SUPPORTS

Please request ALL RELATED MSDS from your merchant and send through all related MSDS. We are unable to progress this shipment until we have received this information.

I have no idea how to obtain a MSDS for these items and how much it would cost. But it's difficult to see how sma gas struts could pose any danger to shipping given cars are shipped all over the world with the same type of gas struts.

I think given they only cost US$10 I will probably ask for them to be disposed of and I only hope I get a refund of the shipping an GST I already paid. To ask me to pay for the items and then two weeks later to tell me they cannot ship them seem a wrong policy. I already provided details on the items when I paid for postage an GST so they should have told me then.

The seller should be able to supply the MSDS for their gas struts, because they are pressurised, they are treated as a pressure vessel. Something like this - https://oscaro.media/catalog/images/pdf/133/gf_sdbl_en.pdf

And yes you are correct, Youshop should have said this before charging you anything.

Thanks. The Ebay vendor said he could not provide this so I am giving up on the item and write it off.  I have asked NZ Post to refund the shipping and GST to me. I don't understand what the risk is but I guess it requires a modicum of common sense to understand the differene between huge tanks of gas and the tiny amount of gas in a strut.

Have a careful read of the Ts&Cs. You tried to ship an item that was on the restricted/prohibited list. NZ Post are not obliged to refund your postage. Indeed, their Ts&Cs state that they can claim further amounts from you to cover their costs of disposing of the items.

You do not need to understand the risk of the item, nor do NZ post. Anything with pressurized gas is a non starter.

NZ post do not own ships or aircraft used for international post in and out of the country. They buy services from other organizations and those guys have an agreed list of goods that they will not carry. The risk that NZ post carry is that a shipping company may refuse to carry any NZ post items in the future if they find that NZ post are giving them items that are on their prohibited list because that would potentially invalidate their insurance.

The gas is probably just pressurised nitrogen, but it's the pressure part which would most likely be the issue, not the type of gas used.

I guess mea culpa for not reading the T&C's all the way through. I thought they were just automotive parts.   I wonder if I asked them to ship somewhere else in the US then they can use the money I paid already to count against that cost?

The vendor may not have an MSDS but have you tried the manufacturer?

Car gas struts usually have iata special provision that allows it to be carried as any normal non-dangerous goods shipment.
From what I can remember it's 'as per special provision SP283'.
However need msds which should state that struts complies with this special provision.

@lchiu7 could you give me youshop's email? I bought some jackets and they can't ship because of prohibited items. Need to email them but can't find any contact
