We have been asked to provide a 'GST registration certificate'.

As far as I can ascertain no such thing exists in NZ (it does in some other countries with GST). We certainly do not have one and have been registered for 14 years now.

Anyone know how to prove you are GST registered?

The only thing I can think of is to add it to the company file on companies.govt.nz - it would appear under the NZBN tab - though this isn't certifying anyone is GST registered as it is entered by the company file maintainer

IRD won't confirm to anyone either as it's a privacy issue

  1. Login to MyIR
  2. Print the page after logging in to PDF.  It should show all tax types you are registered for with the business name, IRD number and address
  3. You can also click on "GST" in the 'All Accounts' section if you want to show them only your GST registration information (instead of all tax types you're registered for)

If they claim they can't trust a PDF print from a website, they shouldn't trust a "GST registration certificate" either.

Which country are they in? Just dummy up something from the IRD web site, make it from the Waikekamukau Branch Office, signed by Frederick J.Dagg, Esq, and send it to them.

(Inspired by a comment from a friend in Europe who once claimed to have "faxed a page from a famous Slovakian novel" to a US company for some sort of paperwork demand they'd set).

Excellent advice.

To add an air of completely fake authenticity, create the text entirely in Te Reo Māori - extra points if it is actually grammatically correct Māori - and put an English translation underneath in really quite small font.

One of these would be good, too particularly if you can Photoshop "Aotearoa" over the "New Zealand"

More fun than putting helium in your best mate's inhaler

NZ and they are a company I am entering into a long term commercial relationship with, so maybe not in this case...!

Registering was too much hassle. I had the accountants send them our last GST return. I am waiting to find out if that will do!
