Are there any experts in radio communications out there? Specifically aviation. I have a few questions?

Go ahead, ask away. I wouldn't claim to be an expert but I do know something about radio communications and aviation.

Cheers guys.   I have a crappy old UBC72XLT receiver. I also used to live down Mt Wellington way and could pick up Auckland Tower.

I'm now up on the Hibiscus Coast.  Is there anyway of picking up the Tower from where I am? Even with a difference receiver or antenna on the roof etc?

You could try an antenna on the roof but that's a pretty long-range to hit tower especially if you want Ground Frequencies.

Have a look at Radio Wiki as there are heaps of others you should be able to pick up no worries.

Often Control tower with initial intention (if passing or originating from a controlled zone)

Then air to air uncontrolled notifications when possibly in area of other active flights.

For akl that appears to be the common 120.4 but has some regional ones when swinging further north.

Dairy Flat Airfield is actually called North Shore Airport so you will get trafffic from there too.

But what @Oblivian has said is 100% on the money

Dairy Flat is designated as North Shore and is 118.0

All the radio frequency information you need is here: https://aip.net.nz

You can get en-route frequencies and aerodrome frequencies for the airports there.

Look at the Air Navigation Register and Common Frequency zones.

Cheers, Matt

VHF is basically line of sight over the distances you're talking about. With a high enough aerial you should be able to get reception.

There's very rarely anything of any real interest. Perhaps it's because I have to listen to it on a daily basis, I just don't get the fascination with listening to aircraft frequencies.  Once you've heard "XYZ cleared to land, or "ABC cleared to intercept the localiser" etc, etc, a few hundred times it all gets a bit mundane. 😞
