450MW ? Tesla Battery Facility in Geelong - One Unit goes Exothermic !

One unit goes Exothermic, flames ensue, what do you do ?
Surprising as these have extensive cell monitoring and management, probably as good as you can do.

EEVBLOG is onto it.

"If we try and cool them down it just prolongs the process," the CFA's Assistant Chief Fire Officer Ian Beswicke said.

"But we could be here anywhere from 8 to 24 hours while we wait for it to burn down."

So it sounds like they can't just dump foam on it... why's that? Is oxygen not a factor?

Well, I guess it's because, I'm pretty sure, that when water and lithium combine, the resulting gas is flammable (hydrogen). Foam has water in it.

Not sure about lithium and dry powder, though. Must look that up.

I have seen what happens when a single cell fails in a heavily monitored environment.

As soon as you see the first sign of any of the individual cell parameters departing normal conditions, it is already too late. Fire is inevitable.

Sounds like they lost the adjacent pack as well but so far the fire hasn’t spread further...

Water is being used to keeep the nearby packs cool while the fire burns itself out

Imagine if it was summer where last year temperatures hit the 40s and water is likely to be in shorter supply. How would they cool the packs. Those in homes nearby must be feeling very worried about the future air quality since these are spontaneous events.

I often wonder if such green alternatives will help the environment or add a new dimension of problems. It seems that nothing bar a horse parked outside everyone’s house is going to make a marked difference.

Looks like they should have put the packs further away from each other, so that there was no risk of a fire spreading between them. Doesn't look like they are short of space around the installation.

This 5 min vid gives an overview of the facility and the fire. It does not go into cause. Knowing nothing about it I found it useful.

The guy seems to think he will get an invite to the facility for a closer look in future.
