A couple of weeks ago I went to the post shop to send an item to somebody in Hamilton, it was pre-paid for with a courier label and packed in a large carton.

I gave it to the courier directly outside the post office and he took it off me. I assumed this would then go directly back to the depot and make the overnight flight to Auckland - instead no pick up scan was recorded.

I filed an investigation with NZ Post and they said "Ive spoken with the driver who does not recall this off hand as they deal with a lot of items on a day to day bases." and "I have checked with the Post Shop they do not have video footage of the outside.".

The investigations lady was pretty helpful and provided updates every few days. But then I got this email from claims stating:

"A thorough investigation has been conducted by us regarding this missing item and we have discovered there is no acceptance scan by the pickup courier, nor any record of this item travelling within our network.

We therefore must conclude that NZPost did not collect this item from you. In view of the above information, we regret to advise that your claim has been declined and no compensation is payable."

I literally handed this item directly to the courier doing the pick up from the post office.

What can I do? The item is of semi-high value at $1300.

They really don't give you much room to dispute their version of events.

I had an incoming parcel go missing and they swore black and blue it had been delivered.

I got a similar outcome to you. I had no recourse.

You could file a claim with the Disputes Tribunal. Personally, I'd consider the item stolen and file a police report. It wouldn't be the first time someone pretended to be a postie/courier, and we seem to hear about posties stealing/dumping/hoarding packages regularly. You then may be able to claim it on your contents insurance.

Lodge a theft complaint with the police? It's pretty clear the courier has simply pinched your item.

That's what I'm thinking of doing... I don't know their name but they do that pickup everyday at the same time.

Although I do have a feeling the Police wouldn't do anything about that due to the "low value" of the item.

So you do recognise the courier, he wasn't just some random standing by the van when you came up with a parcel?

Yes he was in uniform with a big trolley loading up the P.O boxes/collecting from the post shop, it was given directly to him.

maybe he did maybe he didn't.

could have unloaded the whole lot later and genuinely missed the scan for the item which then ... ?

It could be either... that's the problem I have with NZ Post. I find the response from the driver "I can't remember" completely unacceptable.

There's been no true effort to find the missing item other than an email to the driver's supervisor.

Post lockdown, go back there at the same time and ask him. Take photos of him and his vehicle.

At risk of sounding out of line but Why would you give it directly to the courier outside the post office? You need to drop it off to the store or the drop box so it gets scanned when they take it, handing it directly to a courier driver outside is just asking for trouble as there is no record of the transaction ever taking place. As “their” processes weren’t followed with the parcel drop off I can see why they are pushing back and saying it wasn’t their fault.

it sounds like the courier has made a wee perky for himself or a friend. As someone else has said, take a photo of the driver and his van/truck and lay a complaint of theft with the police, this may help with you claiming insurance on the item.

I would also be hitting up both their social media and potentially other media outfits (fair go etc who no doubt would love a story about theft by a courier driver given the ever increasing reliance on them for revenue these days by businesses).

Not necessarily. NZ Post agents don't routinely scan items when dropped off. They are bagged, collected by courier and scanned by NZ Post at a later time. I've had packages not scanned into their system for in excess of a week before being sent overseas.

I now understand it was a bad idea. I usually send 3-4 packages a week and have them picked up from my home, but this was urgent and as it was already late-afternoon I knew it wouldn't actually get picked up until the following day.

It was a designer down-jacket so I can see the possibility of someone stealing it, but I'm unsure as to how the driver knew what the contents were without opening (if he did indeed steal it).

I'll definitely hit them up on Facebook/Twitter, but as you say as I didn't follow their protocols of either dropping it off at a postshop or scheduling a pick up - so my odds of getting any compensation are slim.

But the shame to them of having a potential thief under their employ might compel them do something, could be worth a shot

I've been there but fortunately just a small item. Courier picked up parcel from home but it wasn't scanned and it never arrived to the recipient. Courier Post shrugs it off and prefer an unhappy customer to admitting any responsibility. The didn't even refund me the prepaid postage for an item that they didn't deliver.

Re handing it straight to the courier driver -- more than once I've been to a post office to drop off a package and been told to take it straight to the courier in the van outside as they've just taken the packages... it's not unheard of to do this
