Very often did not agree with his politics, but I did get to meet him many years ago and he was indeed "Intelligent, funny and kind" as the PM described him.

I met him a few times when he was our Minister. He was a very friendly Minister and liked to chat. He had nickname of Frank Spencer as he had a reputation of being clumsy. I witnessed this on one of his visits to our office when he tripped and sent all the contents on a desk and sent a cup of tea into a colleagues lap.
