a tiny South Island tourist town will join the rebellious nation and set its own clocks.

When New Zealand "springs forward" into daylight saving this weekend, Te Anau will never go back.

The picturesque Fiordland lakeside town - population 2760 – is shifting to "Te Anau Time".

They say it will give visitors an extra hour to see their dazzling sights

Probably not. I knew a few Southlanders many, many years ago. Some of them can be a bit odd.

As you’ve probably worked out it one of the crazy local tourism promotion gimmicks... and will have no impact for at least 6 months....

Private businesses can open whatever hours they want, so there’s no real issue for them.. the fun will come with things like government departments.. DOC etc along with schools ( although schools have a fair bit of independence if they are prepared to jump through the right hoops) ...

let’s wait and see what happens in April next year...

I suppose the next question is whether it's been formally announced somewhere (I'm guessing not!). The time zone database hasn't been updated :)

AM Show reporter this morning said it was summer in Australia today.

So why not.

Having heard the spokesperson interviewed by Lisa Owen on RNZ this evening, I've got my doubts that it's actually going to happen. He seemed very unsure of whether it was going to take place.

I think we should introduce permanent summer time in NZ.

Nek minit the local ladies will be complaining about the extra fading of their curtains brought on by the longer daylight hours - and the cows won’t know what time to start wandering in for milking.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Are you sure... wont they get the same amount of daylight but just "time shifted". As for the cows... same.....its the farmer who has to time shift.

Eracode is pulling your leg....the two points mentioned are the standard objections raised to daylight savings throughout time in NZ , that have been well and truly debunked...:)

I'm not sure whether you're serious - or if this was a dead-pan return leg-pull.

FTFY.

Seems confused... we "spring forward" to "summer time". Either they stay on winter time while the rest of us switch, or they'll stay on summer time when we "fall back". I assume the latter.

And then there's the bit that Batman didn't quote, which seems a bit, well, unrelated to daylight.

OTOH, Te Anau is to the west of almost everywhere in NZ, so gets less benefit from putting clocks back... it already has longer evening sunlight than the rest of NZ. I well remember a visit there in late December (i.e. just after the solstice), and the extraordinarily long twilight until about 11pm (DST). The Earth rotates 15deg/hr, so Te Anau at 167deg is already getting 45 minutes of daylight saving compared to Gisborne at 178 deg. Even at the winter solstice, with shorter days than most (8hr 43min) due to its southerly position, the sun still doesn't set until 5:15pm i.e. later than Gisborne at 4:52pm

I have long wished that this Daylight Stupid Time would just stop. We don't need it. The whole country should just remain on summer time after the next switch occurs. People in the arctic do just fine with daytime darkness. It doesn't matter the slightest what time you do something, just do it when the moment is right. The cows won't care and neither will the curtains.

I would be ok with ending daylight saving if I could withdraw all the savings and use them.😁
