So, we have hit 85% Full and are only 5% off the historical average. More rain is forecast over the next 10 days, which will likely get us to nigh 90%.

Water restrictions remain.

Is it easy to find out where we would be without the Waikato supply being increased?

I can't recall how long that supply will remain in place for, so I am wondering what our longer term outlook is?

What the heck is a gigalitre? I hope it’s 1024 * 1024 * 1024 litres but I’d imagine it’s not.

When I’m dealing with data, I work in GB figures all the time but I never really think of them as billions of bytes, so when I see Gigalitre, it’s really off-putting. Billions of litres makes so much more sense.

IT is the outlier in using a binary result as opposed to a decimal measure,

No one really expects a kg to be 1024 grams,  or do they ?

It's to allow for evaporation and leakage

I suppose you could use Megatonne but that has connotations

It makes total sense? 1 litre = 1,000 ml is a common measurement we often use....

I just installed a 500 billion byte SSD..... gigabyte sounds much nicer :)

Giga is an SI prefix for 10e9, so it means Billions. Blame binary for the abnormality that results in the argument about GB vs GiB.

Ok I definitely just got schooled there. I will now quite happily admit that I did presume “giga” only refers to computer data and was quite wrong.

Edit for typo.

All the answers seem to be on the Watercare website, just not in one place or easy to find.

50 Million litres/day from Waikato (consent up to 175) https://www.watercare.co.nz/Water-and-wastewater/Water-supply-situation/Boosting-supply

Target usage 410 ML / day (379 actual) https://www.watercare.co.nz/Water-and-wastewater/Where-your-water-comes-from/Auckland-s-dam-levels

Also https://www.watercare.co.nz/Water-and-wastewater/Where-your-water-comes-from/Rivers

The metric system changes prefix (kilo, mega, giga etc.) in base 1000 not 1024!

Should really be using cubic metres for volumes that large.

1 Gigalitre -> 1e09 Litres = 1,000,000 m3 or a 1m deep square km of water.

Great website:

https://aucklandwatersupply.co.nz/

I use this one, the one annoying thing is that they only update the comparison graph at the end of every month.

They should really be using Register Standard Units, which for volume are grapefruit or Olympic Swimming Pools

Given that the Waitaks have been full for a while now, could we not be using more water from them as they seem to fill faster to help the hunuas recover?

and with the hunua's could water not be transferred or used from the full ones?

How hard would it be to make extra reservoirs in the hunua's or waitaks?

We're already doing this, Watercare preferentially draws water from the Waitakeres dams.

doesn't appear they can do it fast enough as they are always full.
