Hi, Just wondering what others who have coffee machines are buying.  The breville water filters are very expensive around $45.00 for six and seem out of stock.  There are some generic ones for around $30 for a pack of six, which I got last time, but they come from Australia.

Im not even sure I should be using the cheaper ones - I noticed no difference.  Anyone know of a good source.

I’m pretty sure I got a warning on my machine (a Dual Boiler) the other day, but had completely forgotten about it until reading this thread (but the message hasn’t come back, which is a bit weird). So, I too, am interested in reading what others purchase.

A quick search shows even Ali Express sells them - first one I checked out was about $10 for 6 incl. shipping.

Sorry not directly related but roughly how often do you need to replace the filters? (considering buying a Breville machine and this isn't something I factored in)

Thanks

The instructions for the breville ones that come with the machine say every two months.  The universal ones say 1-2 months.

This is what my manual says:

The provided water filter helps prevent scale build-up in and on many of the inner functioning components. Replacing the water filter after three months or 40L will reduce the need to descale the machine. The limitation of 40L is based on water hardness level 4. If you are in level 2 area, you can increase this to 60L.

Reading the manual I must have been imagining a warning, as it’s user-managed! I clearly set the date on the filter and promptly forgot about it - I’m well overdue for a change based on that. Yet another thing to add to my calendar to do regularly… but, yeah, I’m thinking of giving those Ali Express ones a go.

What about these ones, which claim “Caution: Some sellers are selling these filters with not qualified material which is not clean and hygeian for drinking. Our filters are definitely made with qualified material, almost the same quality with the genuine one.”!

Why not just use an under-sink filter and fill up the tank from that? like the ones that have the little tap.

https://www.bunnings.co.nz/stefani-single-undercounter-water-filter-system_p5090103 as an example

I gave up using the Breville filters 1 month into using the machine as I have 2 filters on the house and one under the sink.

Edit: Added Example

That's a carbon filter, good for removing chlorine or other off tastes, but it won't "soften" the water - as the "ion exchange" filters may do.

Thanks.....by the time you add in all the other costs, there are no real savings.

If you have good quality water you don't need them.

If you are concerned about your water quality the cheapest way to filter water is to use a Brita jug or a water filter kit which you can plumb in. It's worth finding out about the quality of your water as hard water can cause scale and gunk up any espresso machine.
