Phone rings, I answer, several seconds of white noise followed by a clear chatbot voice that says 'Goodbye' and disconnects.

What possible purpose is served by this? Is it supposed to entice me to ring back the calling number and get charged thousands of dollars a second? I would never do such a thing and I have a hard time imagining that others would, but I am intrigued. What is the mysterious caller trying to achieve with this?

Presumably, the recorded message the robot *thought* it was playing you was corrupt...

I get this regularly, both landline and mobile, it could be to confirm your number is real and pass on the number in a list to scammers.

This or there weren't enough certified Microsoft technicians in their Indian call centre to handle all the answered calls.
