Hey Team, we have 6 year old F&P dishwasher and the racks are rusting to pieces.

I’ve never experienced this with a dishwasher before - never had an F&P though.

Is this normal? I realise it’s 6 years old but I replaced the bottom rack a few years ago with a second hand one off trademe. The top rack is now rusting apart and this isn’t subjected to the same stress as the bottom rack ie it’s just mugs and glasses.

We've had a few F&P dishwashers over the years. I don't recommend them, but when you've got a bench that's just a little lower than most dishwashers, you don't have much choice.

I have seen rust where the wire joints have failed, but it's never visibly spread beyond the immediate area. The lines on the top of the wire suggest to me that abrasion may have weakened the coating, allowing the issue to spread.

My thoughts exactly. I just replaced the bottom tray as it does get a lot of abuse - sharp items, bent plate holders etc. but I was rather surprised when the top rack started rusting too. This picture is just one side and the rusting is actually all over the rack.

Im quite pedantic about the dishwasher so I’m the only one who stacks it. The picture shows the area where I only even put mugs. So no sharp edges. I do agree that the coating is likely the issue.

There are areas where nothing is placed eg read of top tray that is also rusting so I don’t think it’s abrasion but likely just low quality coating or manufacturing issues.

We had that happen to ours but not as bad, it was about 3 or 4 years old, I contacted F&P and they replaced it after some convincing at no charge.

Our ten year old Bosch looks pretty much the same as the day it was installed, including inside, outside, and racks. The metal hinges and such aren't perfect but they're not bad either.

Yep, same happened to our F&P dishwasher. Both bottom and top trays rusted out very badly. It was 5-6 years old when we got rid of it. We weren't overly careful with it but we didn't abuse it either.

I've seen spots of rust on the allegedly stainless steel used to make the body.

I think the standard of the stainless used could be better.

I had a very old F&P dishdraw DD603 that was 15 odd years old with no signs of rust. Current Bosch is 4 years and zero signs either.

I guess their new owners are cutting costs... Surely a CGA claim would be upheld for this.

Bung: What detergent powder/tablets are you using?

80% of the time its "Active" powder  ("recommended by F&P"). Otherwise its Finish Powerballs.

I use powerball tablets in an old F&P dishdrawer that came with the house so its very old not a hint of rust.  That is terrible.

Similar issue with a ~6 year old F&P, had both trays replaced once by F&P around 3 or 4 years in, they weren't very interested in replacing them a second time. The areas of rust weren't even in joins or stress locations.
