Have to say today in Hamilton its been bloody hot, likely the hottest day of summer so far!
I feel for the folk down in Christchurch, I just read on the Herald website that the temp peaked at 41 in Barrington.
I just saw the 5pm news update on TVNZ 7, during the weather they made a comment about the roads in Christchurch melting, then had an update saying the Desert Road is suffering the same problem - the same road thats normally closed by Snow/Ice is being effected by the other extream.

Some parts of roads also melting here in Matamata. Bit tricky trying to avoid the melted patches in my car.  Around about 30 deg, I think.

It's been hot here in Wgtn as well - got to 29 outside in my back yard in Lower Hutt.

We have a nearby road that's completely fallen apart today. Ironically this 200m section has been resealed 4 times over the past 2 years for the exact same reason while the rest of the ~4km long road in fine. Really makes you wonder whether the people doing the work know what they're doing!

Officially, I see we here in Invercargill have only got to 23 degrees, but I know in various parts of town its been 27+. The sun has been rather intense (hence the difference in temp.). Had a really huge long thunder storm this morning to kick off the heat!

It was a pretty hot day here in Newmarket today, certainly makes our air-conditioning a God send.

Got in my car to go home in Christchurch and my aircon fan just stopped! Argh. If only there was a cargeekzone site. I guess this is boomtime for aircon repairmen.

Really makes you wonder whether the people doing the work know what they're doing!

To a degree they do, but they're largely constrained by the two factors.  One is the rubbish asphalt mix generally available here, which probably originates mostly from the second reason.  The second reason is "tight" roading budgets which only allow for the cheapest methods of resealing - which is usually low grade tar covered in metal chips.

These chips do an incredible amount of damage to the paintwork of vehicles every year because of the shoddy way many roads are laid/resealed, however, that's a bit OT.

I've been to tropical countries (where the heat is generally significantly higher than here year round) a number of times and their roads don't fall apart like ours do.  And before anyone jumps up and says "the roads over there are concrete" - only some of them are...
