I see Mauricio has twittered about a Sony camera with wifi so you can upload photos directly. That made me think - most cameras have a miniUSB interface these days. Has anyone made a device that will add wifi capability for a camera? Wouldn't it be awesome if you can upload directly from DSLRs? If one can add wifi to a DSLR then it's probably not a big deal to add 3G, etc. Having said that, imagine uploading photos from a high megapixel DSLR in highest quality mode over 3G - I imagine quite costly!

Has anyone seen such a device? Or is it possible at all?

I haven't see that but the Eye-Fi SD cards are extremely popular. An SD card (with storage space) with built in WiFi that can connect to many different networks and automatically upload photos.

The EyeFi is the way to go - for now. You drop a configuration file on the card and it will connect to an access point and upload the pictures.

However you can't use it with protected hotspots such as those who need a login through a browser. That's why the new Sony Cybershot is different: it's got built-in WiFi and a browser so you can use it to login to any provider...

Wow! That's awesome! Is anyone on Geekzone using one of these? Can it be set up to upload to a specific shared folder on a PC within the WLAN, basically synching the content of the shared folder with the card?

The Nikon D2H DSLR introduced a WiFi option back in 2003-2004 (not sure if it was available when the camera was first released in 2003). The WT-1 WiFi device was mounted to the base of the camera and supported a built in antenna or external antenna if needed.

There are several phones with respectable cameras now that can do this (along with Geotagging and other things), worth considering if you don't need a super-charged standalone (Sony C905, Samsung Innov8 and G810, Nokia N82). Its a logical step for cameras to add this functionality, they need to do something to stop their market drying up over the next couple of years as cameraphones improve and add additional features.
