A snip from Newscientist:

quantum computer that encodes information in pulses of light has solved a task in 36 microseconds that would take the best supercomputer at least 9000 years to complete.

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

Oh gawd, it's this week's quantum-supremacy article. Whenever you see one of these stories, and there have been an endless parade of them over the past few years, you need to read the title as:

Quantum computer solves artificial problem created to be easy to solve with a quantum computer but hard to solve with a conventional computer and of no use to anyone faster than a conventional computer could.

@neb   one way or the other.... the mind boggles 😀

Because of pending (10+ years) real world quantum computers:

There are experts trying to future proof security systems and password systems.

https://www.csoonline.com/article/3653634/preparing-for-the-quantum-safe-encryption-future.html

Spies may be storing data to decrypt with quantum computers:

My typical 12 character password would take 34,000 years to crack with a conventional computer and less than 17 minutes with a quantum computer.

When the Russians figure out how to use it you will have no more life to live.

Enjoy.

Because of pending (10+ years) real world quantum computers:

Powered by pending (10+ years) clean nuclear fusion power [*].

In any case there's actually a much bigger threat than quantum computers that's been totally ignored by cryptographers so far.

[*] We'll have clean nuclear fusion power long before useful (non-toy) quantum computers, because the former is just a really big engineering problem while the latter requires bending or possibly breaking several laws of physics.
