After an incident recently, a friend and I were discussing what the recovery stats would be for stolen property in New Zealand (and in general). My guess was around the 30% mark, whereas my friend suggested maybe 50%, which I thought was quite high.

I can't seem to find any stats related to this anywhere - anyone have any ideas?

Have you looked on the police web site? They usually publish annual results by category.

I have checked the policedata.nz website, but they don't seem to have property recovery stats. Only that a burglary occurred. Unless I completely missed it, which is possible.

No, the best you might get will be the case closure rate, or some other similar term.

If you really want the specific number, you could make a request using the official information mechanism.

I would guess less than 5%

reason being, the police dont put any resources into it. They are too busy to investigate .
Even when given photos of the thief & security cam footage ...

Even when given an adress where the stolen goods are , they often wont do anything. Ive heard that complaint often .
People see their stolen goods for sale on FB, they get the address , the police arnt interested (it seems)

That has absolutely been my experience as well. Even with a direct line to those that have the stolen goods it was a "we'll try be there if you decide to meet up to make sure things don't escalate, but it's on you" basically.

I understand staffing shortages and stuff, but damn, its pretty bloody bad.

I expect recovery is not a priority. When police arrest for burglary and discover remains of stolen property are they really going to go make a big effort to find and go through TradeMe and Facebook history to seek return of the property to the owners? Maybe in some cases probably not for most.

I’m starting to wonder what IS actually a priority.

It’s all good. Poto Chris will fix it.

This hasn't been my experience. I've contributed footage in relation to several burglaries, most if not all of which have either resulted in prosecution or identifying the individuals involved (youth crime).

If anything, it's the courts that are the problem, creating extra work for the Police. It can literally take years to get a prosecution. If people don't turn up, they eventually get arrested, taken to court an a new date set. Rinse, repeat...

Living next to known car thieves for 2 years I would disagree.
Even when call the police when cars are being stripped late at night in the driveway or on the road outside (3am) ..... nothing

In 2 years , 2 police visits , despite numerous calls from neighbours .
1st visit , they were arrested them all, removed the stolen cars  , removed stolen goods from the house.

All out on bail the next day & they carried on thieving .
So , I can understand if the Police think whats the point ..... when courts do nothing .

I can understand there's not much point going to investigate house burglaries etc when there's going to be no usable evidence
But at the time when stolen cars are being stripped ...come on .

A friend's son lives rural, burgled a few years back. Police not interested until he said a firearm was missing - they couldn't get there quick enough then.
