If you live in the Bay of Plenty and listen to Radio Magic then hard luck. I thought my car radio tuning was doing something but after a quick call to Magic, was informed their transmission tower Tauranga, got hit by lighting during the night and will be off air for several days.

Apparently repair crews are on their way from Auckland to fix things.

Their web site gave no indication and yet the person I spoke to complained he had non-stop calls. So I kindly advised him a web site front page update would alleviate his annoyances 😠.

Are you talking about the Mediaworks station 'Magic', or is this a local station with a similar name?

I would have thought that all of the Mediaworks stations would use the same transmitter.

This is Mediaworks Magic Tauranga 99.8FM.

I don't know, i'm just going by what I was told over the phone. The lighting could have hit their large satellite dish on top of their Tauranga branch office.

Or, far more likely, just their equipment attached to the Kopukairua TV/FM transmitter got hit. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_radio_stations_in_Bay_of_Plenty#FM_stations

EDIT: anyway irrelevant now as they are back on air. πŸ‘πŸ˜€

Did it affect all the other FM stations in the area, particularly the Mediaworks ones? They usually operate from the same transmitter. Seems odd it would only affect the one station and nothing else.

I think Gold on 99FM and The Station on 105.4FM were offline too.

Each station has its own transmitter but it’s common to share the same antenna.

There are multiple FM antenna on the Kopukairua hill.

According to this Wikipedia article, some Mediaworks stations are using something called Kopukairua No.3, but no explanation as to what that is.
