hey guys,

I've been editing a few short clips with mostly photos and video to music using Windows movie maker. I was wondering if there are  any free better alternatives that are not super complicated? Or what would my options be if I choose to spend some money?

I dont need lots of flash features just the basic's really must a little bit more than WMM.

Cheers,

I use 2 programs to video edit.

If you have Nero Burning software then use nero recode.

For general conversion, i also use a program called Super. Google will find it easily for you and it's free.

Super is great because it can convert from any format to any format. Drag the file you want to convert into Super and then you can select what you want the result file to be, eg avi to mpeg or vice versa. or mpeg4 to flv (flash video). You can experiment with various bitrates to get some good results.

My upload is only 160k so i try and get the bitrate as low as possible so the file is small enough to upload to YouTube quickly, but without getting the quality too low that you get a "pixelly" video. Youtube seems to drop the quality a bit more so havent perfected the method of making sure YouTube's result is exactly the same as my original upload.

I've converted some old VHS stuff to flv format using Super and then uploaded to YouTube.

Do a search on DJ Fobtronics (my YouTube page) to get an idea what the results are like.

Cheers

Having used several video editing suites over the years including, Sony vegas, Nero's, adobe preimer and Pinnacle Studio, I can say Pinnacle is by far the best, its as complicated as you want it to be, its can be very simple or get more complicated as your experience increases.
In the final make movie section you have several options, one being optimise for youtube (if thats where they will end up), other options are to save as mpg, mp4, divx, wmv etc etc, burn straight to dvd or vcd and to put it back on the tape it came off..
The only problem with it is its not free, but its extremely good value. Theres three versions that give you extra features and special effects etc. I would go for the standard version or the plus if you think you might want extra features later on (they cost quite a bit to buy seperatley, but you get quite a lot bundled with the plus version that arnt in the standard)

Have a look here if your interested

It doesn't really matter what you upload to youtube as long as it's the right resolution and a codec they can decode as they recode it to low quality sorenson and mp3 audio inside a FLV.

Well actually if you upload H.264 with AAC audio you do get an extra link on the page which is show in HD but most people won't notice/click that.
