My cat, who is a terrible hunter, is showing up at the door with a fresh mouse every few minutes. The grass must be literally crawling with them. Is this related to the wet weather we have been having and does it qualify as a plague? If pest-free New Zealand includes mice, we haven't got a hope of making that goal any time this century.

Probably just wet and cold, so hanging around Rikki's Castle might offer better shelter and food options. Foiled by the furry bouncer though!

its probably a change in the cats behavior more than anything, especially as its bringing them back to you.

Did you scold said animal and these are its representations of deep remorse.

Reason I won’t get another cat because the gifts became too overwhelming especially in the middle of the night when you could hear a more muffled meowing because of the rodent stuffed in its mouth. It would deposit it live in the en-suite and chase and pounce on it with it with bleary eyed Mr E trying to catch the animal to throw it outside. Two minutes later, cat would return with another one. Had to lock the cat door.

Living next to a town belt means there are hundreds seeking the warmth of home.

My property has had a big increase in mice and rats the past few months!  I think its the wet weather driving them inside.  My cats have gotten too old and now really can't be bothered going out either.

However the rats in my external garage all just committed suicide, you know how they love to steal off with things and chew/eat whatever they've made off with?  Well they stole my newly purchased box of rat poison last night ... found it delicious apparently!

Stoats, weasels, ferrets, rats, possums. If mice like the same bait as some of those then their population might decrease, but they're not a target.

A couple of weeks ago I saw a mouse in the kitchen for three days in a row (in the evening). We moved to a new house a few months ago and I hadn't got my usual bait-setting routine in place. My bad.

Caught two in traps just under the eaves and a lot of poison was taken from under the house, in the roof, and around the house.

It must have worked since in the last week the new batches of poison bait hasn't been touched.
