Just noticed this start of a bee nest under the eve of my house.

Does not seem to be active.

Do I just knock it off with a broom handle or rake?

Looks like a paper wasp nest.
Check it early in the morning or at dusk and see if any wasps are there.
Better to try kill them at the same time you destroy the nest. :)

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

It's not honey bees, so no keeper will be interested - just knock it off.

as above, just a wasp nest. no wasps on it, its dead, so just knock it off.

Perhaps soak it with a strong soap solution first such as dishwashing detergent. That will kill them all quick.

If you need to kill them, fly spray is almost immediately lethal to wasps, they haven't built up a resistance like flies have. I've taken out two wasp nests with nothing more than a half-empty can of that.

no need to try and kill them, its already dead. alive nests have wasps on them looking after the young. wasps are in hibernation at the moment.

I finally got around to knocking the nest down.

Luckily it was only a 10C morning and a dozen or more sluggish wasps started crawling around on the ground.

I gave them a spray of sugar soap followed by some CRC (only stuff I had on hand) 😀

I notice you did not burn it with fire.

CRC and a lighter combined makes for a very effective tool for dealing with wasp nests ..

Reminiscent odour of aviation fuel..

I love the smell of CRC in the morning. Smells like... wasps.

Blast of fly spray first thing in the morning sorts these buggers out. No need to burn the house down with improvised flamethrowers!
Although the latter is way more fun.

Too late now but my vote would have been filling up a paddling pool and knocking it into that.

While not as exciting as fire, water does the job with less chance for property damage.
