I have been a movieshack customer for a while now and now more recently I am a fatso customer thanks to the great merge of fatso, movieshack and dvd unlimited. However I think fatso is a rubbish name and I can't understand why they went with that one on the relaunch? Am I the only one bothered by this new name?

I wasn't too bothered about it until I started seeing the fatso ads on TV (they play on Sky mostly)...maybe they chose the actor in the ad to fit the company name Tongue out

No offense taken whatsoever... and I'm a good 15kg over what I should be.
Someone coming up to me in the street and calling me tubby would aggrivate me...
It's just a marketing gimmick. The name ties in with the advertising personality, making it memorable. Just another promotional tool. People should only take offense to things like this because they're not directed at individuals.
I could see how people could be upset a little with it, but I'm so numb to TV advertising now I pretty much expect it to be manipulative garbage, and tune out 90% of the time.

This is an outrage!

For billions of years since the outset of time, every single one of your ancestors survived, every single person on your Mum and Dads side, successfully looked after and passed onto you life.  What are the chances of that like?

Probably better than retard.com.

Yes you probably are the only one bothered by this, but dont worry the new government will flush your PC guilt away within a couple of years.

p.s I just checked retard.com and it was already taken, that explains it.

I think people have misinterpreted my rant - I never really thought of fatso as associated to fat people and really don't care, I just liked the name movieshack better, describes the business doesn't it? Ha oh well.

In regards to the word retard I used the term 'computer retard' to describe myself in one of my blogs and I got this blasting for my troubles

"computer retard?

Wow, how demeaning and offensive to use that terrible word.

Believe it or not, people who are actually retarded are human beings with feelings. Why not consider that before you use that word in a derogatory phrase again."

I dont like the name fatso.  I'm not offended by it, I just dont "get it".  Maybe I'm too old (I'm the wrong side of 30).

I'd have thought something like these would be better:
  • movies2u.co.nz
  • moviesdirect.co.nz
  • dvdsdirect.co.nz
  • flicksdirect.co.nz
  • moviereel.co.nz
and all the endless possibilites like that.

P.S. retard.co.nz is available by the way ;-)

The tie-in of the name and character is very good marketing, it makes it more memorable than other boring generic names with "movie" or "dvd" because there's more likely to be other companies with similar names which would mean there's little distinction between a bunch of companies who essentially offer the same service.

It's all about point of difference.

Plus there's the couch-potato connotations. All the movie buffs with bum firmly on couch and hand on the remote can identify with the slothly geek in the ad.
