I'm expecting a few more "hiccups" like this to pop up today,

"Fuel stations are reporting nationwide outages at self-service pumps.

Allied Petroleum, Gull, Z and other fuel stops around New Zealand have ground to a halt on Thursday due a software glitch they say is likely caused by their systems not being programmed to deal with the date February 29."

If you've ever programmed to handle dates, you'll know it's not every 4 years !

Fun and games !

The cynical me thinks someone has pushed out a bad update to the system that broke stuff, and they are just blaming Feb 29 to cover their own behind reputation.

How can leap year cause problems with software that's been in use for years? Or if they have been developing new stuff, have their analysts never heard of a leap year? Or have they never implemented testing for these specific cases?

It's all a mystery. But again, as mentioned above, stupidity...

If you've ever built something that relies on that knowledge instead of using the existing date APIs, then...

The article I skimmed through quoted a site owner saying they got new software last year.

The stations are pushing the blame to the payment providers. Weird, though, that its only fuel stations having the issue (there's not that many payment providers out there are there?)

Some of my questions still remain the same then:

  • have their analysts never heard of a leap year?
  • Or have they never implemented testing for these specific cases?

Ah Invenco systems failure. Supposedly a patch in is the works but to have that rolled out to thousands of terminals will still take a very long time.
