Not-so-little-anymore-Miss MDF has acquired a taste for bubble tea and it's not a cheap habit!

Geekzone was super helpful on my beverage addictions, hoping for similar wise counsel on this one. Any tips on making bubble tea at home? Recommended suppliers? I'm in Wellington South and there are a few Asian Supermarket stores around but no real idea where to start.

My daughter likes bubble tea. So, we gifted her DIY Taro bubble tea maker from The Tea Box NZ | Create Your Perfect Bubble Tea. Got the package very next day. Daughter was very happy and the tea tastes good too.

I arranged kit deliveries from https://petitecha.com/ for my daughter while she was studying at Uni.
The results were very good apparently...

Avalanche Coffee make packets of DIY bubble tea. I've tried the caramel one, it was passable. Can get them from most supermarkets, usually sitting next to the coffee or tea.

Yes, if you are really keen on drinking bubble tea - the one above is really not bad.

Although I would highly suggest you reading about Ultra Processed Foods about how bad they are for your health.

The tea is the easy part, tapioca pearls are very difficult to get right consistently without effort and practise.

The pre-packaged ones are okay for convenience, but if you have a particular shop that does them well it isn’t quite the same.

Edit: there are recipes online, they are mostly just sugar tapioca starch and water. You can find tapioca/cassava root flour at taiping or asian supermarkets. E.g.

Cant edit my last post, but want to add that there is a in-between option. You can find big packs of pre-made balls at the asian supermarkets as well, this takes the hassle out of mixing and rolling your own. It can be a bit pricier but takes a lot of work out of the process, you just have to cook them the way you like :)

Any Asian supermarket should have the bubble tea pearls, you just need to be careful about the timing to make sure they don't get too soggy and conversely don't dry out and harden again.  For the tea component, any cold-brewed sugary liquid will do.  Pre-packaged teh tarik is a quick starter for the liquid part.
