I have a buiness trip to Germany in 2 weeks, on the way back I'm transiting through Hong Kong for 6 hours.  I believe there is good shopping there... anyone know what a geek can do in 6 hrs onthe ground in HK?

I wouldn't mind picking up a replacement for my N95, which died last week... anything I need to be aware of when buying a mobile in HK?  It will be for use in Aussie/ NZ (currently on Vodafone).

Cheers, Stevo

Beware of buying phones over in China. Its the land of cheap copies.

They have NO scruples about marketing fake products as legitimate ones. Eg not labeling as a 'Nokla' or something similar sounding. They will actually call it a Nokia.

I did a fair bit of research into this before going to HK and China last year... I found that the one off (dodgey feeling) corner stores were not that much cheaper than some of the more reputable stores.  I ended up buying a HTC phone from Fortress and was really pleased. I suppose they are the equivalent to our Dick Smiths and there are plenty of them around.  Gave me a lot better vibe than anywhere else and good reviews online. Happy shopping!

P.S. There is a tiny little "ENG" sign on the top of their website if you would prefer to read in English!

I've shopped at Fortress and they appear to be a very reputable store with only genuine products,  you do need to be aware that while most of their prices are very very good value,  in some cases it is cheaper to buy in Australia.   My mobile was Aust $40.00 cheaper in Australia than Fortress's price for the same model and the Australian supplier included a bonus external battery pack.

A good comparison Australian web site for mobiles is:  http://www.discountmobiles.com.au
