Hi everyone! I’m trying to send my old microwave (Panasonic Microwave 800w Silver 20 Litre ST23QM) to my uncle since we’ve just bought a new one and no longer need it. He’s happy to take it, but NZ Post quoted us $55 to ship it from the North Island to the South Island, which feels quite expensive for local shipping.

Does anyone know of a cheaper or better option for sending medium size items like this? Thanks in advance

North Island to the South Island is not local shipping! Send your uncle $40 and he can buy a Microwave on Market Place

Or wait till Boxing day sales start (lol) and just buy one which includes shipping nearby. New with a warranty woudn't cost you much more than trying to ship your one.

Crazy isn’t it? China can design, tool up and manufacture a new microwave, package and ship it through a distribution chain to NZ via a retailer and on to the consumer with warranty, for a similar price to NZ Post sending an old one across NZ.

Are you packing it in the orignal box?

I wouldn’t be sending nz post standard courier for a microwave…. You probally don’t want it to be thrown about.

so in that case to package it properly, and then have a bigger dimension and weight…(how were you planning to keep the glass platter secure)? Etc etc

then your shipping cost increases….especially if it’s fragile.

i think cheapest microwave at the Noel Leemings and briscoes is $149 (sharp and Panasonic).

scale of production, scale of shipping….. 40ft containers on the sea voyage… then by pallet to a local retailer…..

Not worth the cost, he's easier just to get a new one locally. Maybe put what you would have paid sending your towards his cost of a new one and sell your current one on Trademe.

Put up a post here - https://wisemove.co.nz - and freight companies will bid on the job.

I have used this many times now for items (think speakers, chairs etc) and it works well. (I have absolutely no connection to them other than being a customer)

I don't think it will be more cost effective in this case though.

Yes, this sort of thing happens reasonably frequently. Very annoying.

Jeez people. Not like it's a new user. People might be on the road. Or sick.

Just calm the fuck down everyone.
