While giving a drawer a long overdue cleanout, I came across a copy of Microsoft Office Basic 2007.

However, printed on the cardboard sleeve are the words "Do Not Discard The CD or This CD Case".

Does this mean I must retain them, and subsequently bequeath them to an heir?

Will MS find out and sue me if I throw them away?

It is a sacred treasure from the before-times, when you bought a piece of software once and could use it forever, if you wanted to, rather than have to keep paying for it again and again and again every month lest you lose it and all the data you processed with it. You must guard it with your life, and choose the heir carefully.

Inside it cites " ... No part of this manual may be reproduced or transmitted ..... other than the purchaser's personal use, without the express written permission of Microsoft".

I wonder to whom I ask permission to get rid of it??

I think as long as you personally throw it in the trash, it's OK. Nobody else can throw it in the trash for you. Kind of the opposite of the T-800 being lowered into the molten steel.

I've come to the conclusion that a lifetime of mildly obsessive tidyness has had the pernicious downside of making me keep too much old stuff.

The various acts of organising, cataloguing, even building storage boxes & drawers to fit floppies, stiffies, CD boxes...
Have dramatically increased the barrier to tossing it all.

If I'd just tossed all the stuff into a steaming pile... it would have been relatively painless to shovel it into a skip.

Anyone need a copy of Encarta ?

Anyone remember the 8" floppies - I'm sure I have some of them somewhere - and a drive (just in case).

Yes. Used them as my CP/M discs during uni days in the mid-80s, and later as bootloaders on mainframes back in the late 80s (back then the mainframes had vacuum tape units and 200 MB drives the size of a washing machine).
