There’s a scene toward the end of the book Contact by Carl Sagan, where the protagonist Ellie Arroway finds a Message embedded deep in the digits of PI. The Message is perhaps an artifact of an extremely advanced intelligence that apparently manipulated one of the fundamental constants of the universe as a testament to their power as they wove space and time. I’m reminded of this scene by the Time.com 100 Poll where millions have voted on who are the world’s most influential people in government, science, technology and the arts. Just as Ellie found a Message embedded in PI, we find a Message embedded in the results of this poll. Looking at the first letters of each of the top 21 leading names in the poll we find the message “marblecake, also the game”. The poll announces (perhaps subtly) to the world, that the most influential are not the Obamas, Britneys or the Rick Warrens of the world, the most influential are an extremely advanced intelligence: the hackers.

So what is the significance of ‘marblecake’? Zombocom says: ” Marblecake was an irc channel where the “Message to Scientology” video originated.

Zombocom: “For the lulz”.

The bit you quote explains it pretty precisely...

Folk from 4chan found the poll and decided to skew its results arbitrarily to show that the poll in effect is useless, as it doesn't properly ensure that the votes are legitimate.

The comparison with a higher being embedding a message in PI is directed at the fact that the poll result has an embedded message too - the higher being(s) are the hackers (I'd say crackers) from 4chan which indicates that that outside influence on the poll is the true indicator of intelligence and influence.

Ultimately it's just a curiousity, it doesn't mean anything significant.

A pretty neat hack in my opinion :)

You're onto it... but only Hackers, and Maaaaaaybe wannabe hackers.

Crackers and script-kiddies are the scum of the earth and need to be expunged along with lawyers and software patent holders. 4chan has a large proportion of very very intelligent and skilled 'hacker-worthy' people, but they unfortunately tend to be lazy and go for the cracker lifestyle :D
