Went and saw the lastest StarTrek movie at SkyCity cinema @ Albany a couple of weeks ago.

Throughly enjoyed the movie.

Though I have to say, it was extremely loud !!!! Almost to the point where I was wincing during the action scenes with the shouted dialog. It was loud to the point that it was hard to understand the dialog.

I like nice loud noisy action movies such as Star Trek as much as the next bunch of people, but this was getting somewhat uncomfortable. Rock concerts at the Arena aren't as loud. .. :-)

And my family complained that I was "talking too loud' for a couple of hours after.. No doubt I was partially deafened ;-)

I'm already partially deaf in one ear, so those with normal hearing, it would have been even louder.

Maybe the sound level was calibrated for a theatre full of warm soft sound-absorbing bodies ? There was only a couple of dozen sound-absorbing bodies in there at the time.

Is this normal now for movies to be this loud ?   I sorta recall the Transformers movie from a couple of years ago was somewhat unpleasant. Do they substitute lack of decent bass response by cranking up the volume to ear-splitting levels ?

And to top it of, I posted feedback about this to both Albany Skycity's e-mail address, and having no response from them, also to, I presume, the overall skycity cinema group feedback e-mail.

Needless to say, no response from them either.

Nasty-gram letter to the CEO next - I'm NOT impressed by their lack of common courtesy in not replying to a politely written e-mail ( much the same as I have written above)

Grr..

I went to the cinema at Botany Downs on sunday to see Terminator Salvation (my last time in a cinema was in Brisbane to see Whale Rider when that came out) and thought that was overly loud as well.

I also went to Sky City Cinema in Albany for Star Trek and I did think it was to loud. Distortion was kicking in.

I have noticed in a couple of previous movies that they were very loud. Is it that I am getting older or are movies being played louder. It could be similar to the music industry compression stuff that has music being compressed to be louder so that the song is noticed more.

Yes it could be that ghastly compression that is ruining a lot of music for me.

Compression, horrible horrible stuff, I'm turning to FLAC torrents such as: "original UK-1987 pressing" more and more in order to burn a GOOD copy to replace the "re release" I had just bought.

I sometimes have even been known to "remaster" a track from the acapella and the instrumental vers when there is no other way.

A lot of compilation CD's are actually just burnt from mp3's or similar DATA compression methods too!! Gasp. I'll blog a list at some stage, it's getting quite large now..

There's been plenty of backlash against the loudness war in the last 2 years.

This is one of the very best videos I've seen detailing the difference between a balanced, dynamic recording and its overcompressed "remastered" version.

.. of course this retarded situation has given us some good parodies:

Metallica... gah, crime against recording. That new album hurts my ears when I leave the stereo on the same volume as regular CD's. Even the guy that mastered it feels ashamed and has washed his hands of it.

No excuses for this, IMO.

For Death Magnetic the the tracks were sent to Guitar Hero 3 after the studio mastering and before the retarded loudness compression was applied.  This really highlights the massive difference in quality.

The Guitar hero 3 versions sound 1000x better than the CD versions.

I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a torrent of the tracks from Death Magnetic extracted from Guitar Hero 3,

Yep correct.

Though even the quieter version still has some clipping (the guy mastering it couldn't believe it came already semi-like that!)

To quote James Hetfield, "we wanted this album to jump out of the speakers"

Sorry James, there was a time where the RIFF or the SONG made that happen.

The snare drum sounds like it's got distortion on it. Nothing can mask Lars' sloppy playing.

Can we wrangle this thread back on topic????

I too feel the volume is getting excessive. And its a nationwide problem too and not just for sky city cinema's. Last movie experience was Knowing in riccarton chch.. There were moments where i wanted to cover my ears it was that bad. Fast and the furious 4 in nelson had the same problem. Why do they do this? there is no need to have it that loud, sure they have to overcome the talking, occasional txt message coming through but cranking the volume upto a level that will slowly deafen your audience isn't the best way to do it surely..

Does anyone have a decibel meter? Going to be hard to prove without some hard facts in hand, subjective listening tests aren't going to be enough

I'm pretty sure that by law they can go over a certain dB level but I could be wrong.
