it's a council bylaw that prohibits window washers from intersections, so if it's legal or not would depend who your local council is.

Legal or not they are pests! One gent who hangs out at a local intersection has been hit (minor) several times by cars as he darts out on oranges. He's a well known local crim and trouble maker, problem is theres no bylaw in chch over it and our local constable can't do much about it. I squirt my windscreen wiper fluid at him when he gets near!

I'd love to do something like hit them, laser them or spray them with something foul but unfortunately that is illegal, I usually approach the lights really s l o w l y if I see them about and if they come up near my car I shoot forward, normally they go and bother someone else and get the clear message.

Nothing worse than the the idiots whom approach and you shake your head furiously and they do it anyway smearing-up your just cleaned car and then stand by your drivers window like you are expected to pay.

It always helps I have had fast cars too.

They are interfering with your private property if they touch your car so you should be able to do something about it.

When they walk up to your car use the windscreen washer and turn on the wipers or just ride a bike

i dont think you can do anything about it if its not illegal !! this guy normally knocks on my window after washing the windscreen to ask for money. Reminds me of my trip to India a very long time ago where some streets have beggers running after cars  ...

Heat a 10c coin up on the Cigarette lighter, toss it in his hand and speed off, or close the window on his fingers, "whoops, my finger slipped on the switch, sori buddi"

leaning on the horn when they start washing the window when you have shaken your head usually helps them understand they're not welcome

They only started showing up around a year ago in Hamilton, I suppose you could try to blame the recession on this for them trying to earn some extra money but yes I agree they are annoying.
I've only encountered them on the corner of Mill and Ulster st, Lincoln/Massey/Greenwood st intersection and sometimes Ohaupo/Kahikatea/Lorne st intersection so far

Simple maths. You can do maybe 2 cars each light change.
1 of these is usually a paying customer(paying say a dollar). Lights change every 2 mins.

Working on that its about $30 per hour.

So you put in a 5 hour day you have $150(and you get to do it in shorts and t shirt in the sun).

Considering most of these guys would struggle to make that working hard for a full day i cant really blame them.

Plus they wont pay tax, still prob getting dole.

I dont pay them though!

The window washers have been at the Mill St Pack'n'Save intersection for years... I've had to tell them to bugger off numerous times when they've headed in the direction of my car.

I approve, sir!

You don't have to pay them, I just pull the poor student trick on them. Wait for them to wash your window, wind down the window when they walk around, give them a big cheery smile, say 'Thanks so much!' and then just sit and stare at them.
