Your iPod either would sync and erase itself, or iTunes would pop up and say your iPod is connected to another library and would you like it to sync with this one in which case you would say no and manually extract your songs from your iPod via third party software.

If its from CDs, you can either re-rip your CDs (hint, get XP to auto send your audio CD to itunes, then set itunes to auto-import and auto-eject when finished)...

or...

Use third party software...

What iPod? If iPod Touch, a lot of the guide to "backup" from iPod out on the internet will not work unless you use 3rd party software to "retrieve" them.

Good luck though.

Kill the process iTunes helper (which should stop auto detection and erasing) then download something like yamipod and pull your music back off your ipod.
