Check the settings in Tools / Advanced Settings and make sure that Resident Shield is turned on.

If that doesn't work, check that your definitions and up to date and run a full scan to ensure you don't have any infections that might be interferring with AVG. I would also suggest running an online scan like one of the following:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

If its all clean then uninstall AVG, reboot and then reinstall AVG.

If you're still having no joy, run AVG Remover from here:

http://www.avg.com/download-tools

and then try installing again.

a bit OT but maybe relevant.

I was having constant trouble with AVG free. Changed to Avast, and had no problems since

My AVG Free has had the same issue occasionally but usually a fresh install of it fixes it.
