So last weekend I came into my room to find a sticky softdrink spilt all over my keyboard and desk, ruined the keyboard completely (well, just wasnt worth fixing. Had a huge rage at my sister's daughter (well, huge in kid terms, the whole disappointed angle), promised never to bring drinks into my room again.

I took his word and bought a nice new wireless board, not cheap. Come into my room tonight and guess what. Sugary drink. All through my brand new keyboard. I'm fairly sure it's ruined as it was on when this drink was through everything, man the girl isnt smart.

I heard you can wash electronics with distilled water as long as they're not on (obviously) and wait a long while for them to dry out. Is this true?

I used tap water after spilling coke on myn, and really really hot water. then left it to dry and worked great.

Yeah I dropped my brand new cellphone in water and dried it out it was mint, nothing in keyboard that dissolves in water or alot of electronics so your pretty safe aslong as its not plugged in to get shorted out.

Clean with hot water - that's the only way sugar can be dissolved out - I don't think meths will dissolve sugary stuff that well. You may need to open up the keyboard and get the residual gunk out from between the plastic keyboard sheets. Be aware that coke is mildly corrosive.
Once you have the sugary stuff out, then a wash out with meths - meths acts as a water dissolver. Displaces the water.
Then dry for a few days in the hot water cupboard. Or somewhere warm - windows sill - but watch the sun - not too much direct light.

You may be able to get away with two keyboards plugged in simultaneously ... an el-cheapo $10.00 for the brat-ling permanently in view, and the more expensive cordless out of reach.

And then there is the issue of sticky mice .. urrghh !! Buttons gunged down by softdrinks and sticky cake.

Teenagers are no better !! Food, drink, dry and flaked hair-product all through the keyboards ...

I have it on good authority that you can put a keyboard through the dishwasher - no kidding. I haven't tried it myself - not game to. A suggestion. Why don't you try it out on the old keyboard to see how it works out.

The spawn is only 7, and we don't have locks on inside rooms for fire safety.

I personally wouldn't do that, but only because I don't know how much soap residue could still be floatin' around in there. Plain old hot water will do the trick just fine I think :P Got me really wondering if I've had such a bad experiance with this, have other people had much worse? Specially with kids.

Just the aforementioned turn off.... did it once and the system kept blue screening after that and couldnt detect the partition. IIRC all I did in the end was plug the drive into another system and ran a Windows scandisk and it fixed it :)

My little monkey hasnt tried anything else....yet....

Got me really wondering if I've had such a bad experiance with this, have other people had much worse? Specially with kids.

Normal experience - kids + computers = disasters !! Not just keyboard and power off issues, but virus + trojans that they download when they click on the "flashy banners"

As for they keyboards, make them use the ones they stuff up !! They'll soon learn the hassles of trying to type something in when they keys get stuck down !

Alternatively, get a membrane covering. For the keyboard, not the kids !!

I have a subwoofer filled with small toys. Both of my boys have amused themselves no-end over the last couple of years putting marbles, cars and small plastic things in the bass-port and watching them disappear.

If you pick it ip and give it a shake, you can just about count the number of individual items in there!

Hey, at the end of the day, they're kids and it's only stuff...really, really expensive stuff. Stuff that never got broken or buggered around with until I had kids. Stuff that was in pristine condition and never left it's perfectly-assigned spot...until I had kids.

Thank God they turned out to be lovable. If they had turned out to be ugly and horrible, goodness only knows how I would've felt. As it is...it's only stuff...stuff that was...

FWIW, they're 2 and 4. The 4 year old no longer "posts letters".

Expectations need to be set right with kids from the outset. I never put my guitars etc away from my now 2.5 year old, even when he was a crawler, he was taught to not play around with them, and now he always comes and asks politely if I can play the drums so that he can play the guitar.
