Hey im new here so i hope i posted this in the right forum.

Oky so some one just dumped a Motorola GP338 PLUS in my backyard and when i switched it on it went straight to the local police radeo. I am wondering if it is just a scanner or an actual walkie talkie or if it is illigal to own, please help me out!!!!

One would think then that it is stolen, as my understanding was that the Police were now completely on encrypted channels..

I think they are moving to digital encrypted communications, but not there yet nationwide?

In whatever the case, if the poster #1 had the device thrown over their fence, then it's not poster #1's, and the right and proper thing to do, whoever owns it, is to turn it into the police station.

Sounds like someone has been out being naughty and was listening to see if police were on their way to nab them, followed up by a "bugger they are" and a radio ended up in your backyard. I'd hand it in if I were you as it's not your property :-)

OP probably doesn't have the charger for it anyway.
The right action for lost property - especially of that nature - is to hand it into your local Police Station.
Lost property unclaimed after a period is returned to the person who hands it in (if they want it), for the record too.
Can't think of why anyone would even bother making enquiries of this nature, to be honest...

It won't be a police radio - they don't use GP338's

It will be somebody's radio they have programmed up to listen to the police.

Police are currently only using encrypted radios on a APCO P25 network in Wellington. Christchurch rolls out next.
