Got myself a new case today, as an aside it was a nice deal - around $100 for a nice looking Thermaltake case with included 430W PSU and 120mm fan.

As has become standard it seems now I am no longer a student and home during the day the courier came by when I wasn't home and despite the fact the box was labelled 'Accept with Signature" dropped it off by the side of the house for me to find when I got home, in line of sight for anyone on the road.

Is this standard practise for couriers to ignore signature requirements? Its has happened for all 3-4 major deliveries I have had here, like this one $200+ (there was a motherboard as well). I live in Hawera so I guess the nearest dispatch point is an hour away so it works out well for me as long as no-one decides to help themselves to free computer parts.

Has anyone had something nicked from this? I assume the courier is then liable as they should not have left it, what is it like trying to prove the parcel was delivered, the value of the goods etc?

I am not overly pissed about this, just worried and curious. In this case the company was Fastway, but I have had it with others as well. Thoughts?

Happens to me all the time, but then 90% of the time someone is home and we know the courier guy fairly well. But agreed it's pretty bad..not sure about the legal side of it.

Seems par for the course in my experience. You'll like this one.....

We purchased 2x heat pumps when we built our new house and Panasonic had a promotion on at the time and we got a certain amount to "panasonic dollars". With these dollars we purchased a DVD HD recorder, a mini system and a small AM/FM radio. The packages were supposed to be signed for. One evening a random member of the public knocked on our door and said asked if we were expecting some boxes of Panasonic goods, to which I said yup. The courier driver had left them on his front door step (in plain view from the street) about two blocks away...completely wrong address. It was only our good fortune that the man delivered them to our place.

You should either take it up with the courier company and or the supplier as they are ment to take the item back to the depot with them and leave you a tag to pick it up or arrange a time where you will be home to drop it off.
The Courier will have some sort of insurence but in the end if it gets pinched someone will have to pay, there are couriers that have signed the paperwork themselves with the initals etc of the person the package is for and have gotten in trouble for this.

Another thing to do is put the tracking number into the supplier website as some of their websites have details like the signiture of the person that signed for it etc and if it is signed I would complain.

Yup, it's happened to me also. The thought has crossed my mind though, what would happen if I said I never recieved the goods? (I would never do something like that though)

I did notice last time, when I brought my case, the courier left a note. But rather than it saying "come to the depot and collect it" it said that "your parcel has been dropped off at Video Easy (my local one) for pickup" Maybe they are trying a new solution to the problem of people not being home during the day...?

It's not out of the ordinary for them to do deals in small towns with local shops for the dropping off of packages.

I always get my packages sent to work then at least I know there will be someone there to sign for them as no one without a pass can get in out of working hours.

Had a look at the Fastway site for this parcel, as below:

Given that it says "A signature was not obtained on delivery" it hardly seems this was either sneaky or out of the ordinary. I will send an email to the PCOnline shop and Fastway and see what they have to say.

No I havn't, although I will check my flatmate hasn't in the past. Something else to note, CourierPost ( ie NZPost) never dropoff I have always collected from in town.

I've had that too, I think with NZ Couriers. When it's with CourierPost I get the usual "come to the post office" card.

We had that a while ago. Courier leaving the goods at the bottom of a ramp to our building (a commercial building on a main road). One of the items they left was a passport, with the courier signing for it. I rang up the courier company who told me that we had signed for the courier to be able to do that. When I asked to see the paperwork they suddenly decided I wasn't allowed to see the paperwork that allowed the courier to do that as I wasn't part of that company (they were using paperwork for a company that had the office next to ours).

Take life for all it's worth - don't just let it pass you by.

The time the Fastways courier left something in the middle of the driveway on the house in front's part was when i originally started disliking fastway..
I only buy (and send) via courierpost "prepaid" um bags/whatever they're called..lol..
or parcelpost/parcelpost tracked

I prefer not to use either of those. Courierpost is certainly a lot better in Upper Hutt than where I work in Lower Hutt, but it would be hard not to be.

Where I work in Lower Hutt, we have tried a variety of couriers - must be a bad area for getting a decent courier. Not saying that all drivers for each company is bad, could just be the 2- 3 block area we are in...
Courierpost: usually sees anyone entering the building and hands them the parcel(s) for the entire building (consisting of about 10 businesses). Gets snarky when you say that you can't deliver for them.

Fastways: Ran over 2 of our large parcels in their depot. Then we had called them to pickup an item needed in Auckland the next day (we called at 9am). They arrived to pickup the following day at midday - despite us ringing at 4.50pm (after about 4 calls to remind them during the day) not to bother as we were going to use another company.

PBT: Unreliability defined.

Poste Haste: We went through a series of drivers who ranged from arriving at 5.30pm (30mins after we close - and telling us this is how they work and we can lump it) to those who told us if we wanted the parcel picked up we should throw it out our 1st floor window.

NZC: Finally, a courier company we could live with. We had an issue with ordering a ticket book at one point, but that is the only problem we have had with them.

That said, other than Fastways (haven't dealt with PBT yet), the drivers do seem better to deal with on all the companies in Upper Hutt.

Don't you just wish 1 company would do the whole country reliably?

A bit off subject but I thought I would share my story

I bought an iPhone off trademe just before Christmas, Had it posted on Christmas Eve by Parcel post where it was picked up from the senders address. I continued to look at track and trace over the next few days and noticed that it still sat on the "Picked up on way to NZ Post Depot" which is sat on.

On New Years eve I went into the New Zealand post depot and asked if my package had arrived, the guy at the depot was a bit confused at what I was asking as he said it should of arrived. He then rang what I would assume was the Christchurch Depot to look up if they had my package. They said that they had no record of my package ever being at a depot and that if my status didn't change to ring the sender.

When I got home from the Depot what do I find sitting outside my door? My package! With the track and trace sticker they remove on delivery removed and no-one in site. I still continued to look at the track and trace which didn't change to delivered until the 16th of January.

I had never had problems with track and trace with NZ Post until then but it has really put me off sending valuable things over post.

Just wondering,why'd you get it sent via parcelpost tracked when i think their compensation for lost etc packages is only max $250 or possibly $500?
That's risky in itself..
When i got my iphone off trademe i got it sent via overnight courier that had (i think) $1000 max compensation available if the iphone got lost in transit etc

I think its up to $1500.. I think I only got parcel post because it was the cheapest
