Ok, I need a new web host.

Can anyone suggest an affordable webhost with at least 2gb of monthly traffic, sql, control panel and pop3 email?

Currently I'm paying $3.95 per month for 250mb of webspace and 1gb monthly traffic.

It seems my provider changed the plans from 'unlimited' to set amounts and failed to tell me.

Spacemonkey offers unmetered bandwidth and are based in NZ - we currently use them for nzconnections.net.nz

Dreamhost (disclaimer: referral link) is another webhost I recommend. I've been with them for many years now and have been impressed with their pricing and service. They are US based though... If you are interested I can send you a promo code which has several discounts/benefits.

If your happy to use a US based service, I would recommend JoneSolutions.com. I've been using them for a while and found their service one of the best I've used (and I've used a few). Quick support, reasonable prices and the company is not big, so the support and service is more personal. For $3.99 a month you can get a reseller account with 2 gigs/10 gigs.

Alternatively check out http://www.webhostingtalk.com and look in the Offers section.

Only problem with DH is that they oversell like a mofo.  And they have been known to experience billing issues too (like that one time the guy in charge accidentally ran the invoicing for a 3 year span and overcharged people by hundreds of thousands of dollars.  All they had to say was "oops").

Dreamhost: Had a trial with them for a domain I own.. seemed a bit too casual. :)
Spacemoney seems to be a reseller using hostingdirect.co.nz (same as my current provider) so would be interested to know if they end up having to remove the 'unlimited' on their plans.

I've used GoDaddy in the USA previously.. so not averse to using a provider in the USA. Jones comes out cheaper and seems to offer more (?) than Godaddy.com. Where in the USA is Jones based? Problem I had with Godaddy was any email sent through my hosted email there was always blocked by spam filters.

Sad really that hosting in the USA works out better/more afforable than a local provider...

I use Dreamhost - no issues so far. Was lucky with payment tho, was some US holiday and they had 90% off a years hosting - so I got a full year for $15NZD :D

Do a Google for DH codes, oodles of different ones offered.

Jones has services based in NJ/Dallas, My account is located in NJ. Ping time to my account is on average 253ms and I haven't seen any load above 2.00 on the server I'm based. Happy to PM you an IP to test and/or a link to do a download test.

I've found that with webhosting its best to expect to pay a reasonable amount for limited resources as your more likely to be able to use those resources fully rather than pay a lesser amount for "unlimited" or high spec resources which you are never able to use. Unlimited hosts always bite you in the backside with their TOS/AUP's.

Sorry, $60 per month is way out of my budget.  The website is for a hobby :)

from JonesSolutions.com

"Our servers are located in the Dallas, Texas US but our office is in Asia.

We are different from godaddy when it comes to support and with our secure, stable and reliable servers."

Interesting to say the least :) Is this the norm?

Sorry, but when you are paying peanuts, you usually get monkeys. Basically if you are paying under $NZ10 a month, the support you get, and server reliability tends to be poor. Essentially they cram you onto servers with thousands of other accounts.  There may be those web hosts  that do offer hosting at those prices, however as you have found (by your provider changing their packages), that is unsustainable in the long term. They will also tend to contract out their support to low wage economies, so if you ever get an email reply, it will the end being poor support. This is based on my experience, so now I pay $20 per month, and get good hosting and support from a NZ based company. It is false economy buying cheap hosting, as it is far too much hassle in the long term. Unless of course you don't mind regularly host hopping.

I'm with www.superhost.co.nz... whose support is really good. I would recommend a host that has the cpanel control panel, as it is very easy to use.
