Gidday!

So there is a chance of needing to move to Oz in ??6-18mths time.
2 adults, 2 really small kids with incredible amount of toys cots etc

Anyone knows how much to ship household stuff to Oz eg per cubic metre approx?
I remember shifting from Invervegas to Chch cost just under $3000 3 years ago (yeah a Crown rip off!)

the thing is Farmers has 50% bed sale on a SLeepyhead super King mmm ... shall i buy it?! Is relocating costs cheap or expensive?

If you have old whiteware, sell it. And they do have bed sales over the ditch !!!

Relocated a household to Oz way back in the late 80's - we packed all our stuff, and the removalists just picked everything up and packed it into a large truck - I think back then it was around $3K ?Now, same deal looks around $6K. But no kid stuff when we moved.

On moving back to NZ from Oz in 2000 we hired a container, filled it up, and then got a shipping company to pick up, ship, and deliver to our new address. You had a week to load and unload either side.
Reason why I used a container on the way back was that I was shipping a car back from Oz to NZ - so half the container was household stuff, and half was the car, with matresses along the sides. It worked about around 30% cheaper, but there was more paperwork to fluff around with - import paper work, etc.
It all depends on how much work you want to do, and how much you are prepared to save.

You'd be better off to sell all un-needed furniture/whitewear and buy new over in OZ. Would work out cheaper than shipping it over there.

Moved back to NZ from Aus in 2003. Hired a full size container. Had car and all the other household stuff you can think of in there. Costed AUD$5500.

Since you are moving to Aus and like everyone is suggesting, sell your stuff here and but it there. It's just so much cheaper.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Yes, I recently moved over to Aussie and I tell you what, things are CHEAP HERE!:) Furniture is as much as 50% cheaper than in NZ and the appliances don't lost too much either.

Do not ship your bed over, totally not worth it.

Sell the bulky items and take the personals. Might pay to look at prices over there. I just obtained a lot of stuff from a friend traveling overseas, fridge, washer, dishwasher, dryer, couch, futon, bed, drawers, second HT setup, desktop computer, rugs, cutlery, pots/pans and the like and it seems what everyone tends to do when heading offshore.

Consider taking a car, it sounds crazy but they charge "stamp" duty there and cars tend to be more expensive there but do some research before doing so.

Also consider where you are moving temperature wise. If heading from Wellington to the sunshine coast, you won't need that trenchcoat and all the icebreaker.

Stuff is cheaper over there for sure, much more competition with stores there not to gouge like they can here.
