Am I the only one that thinks it is unfair for the stadium to put the prices up to get into the cricket if you buy your tickets on the day of a match!?

Went to the cake tin ticket counter at 4.30 yesterday to find they had increased the price by $8; seems grossly unfair to me, as they have been advertising the price on their website etc. at the lower rate!

Doesn't it reflect the cost to have staff to sell tickets on the day?

Prior to the event they are sold through an agent who can spread those costs over all the events they are selling. If you buy a ticket on the gate they are recovering the direct cost of having someone there to sell tickets.

If you don't like it, buy your ticket early, I think for some events you can even by on the day at the ticket agent until a certain time which allows you to wait and see if the weather clears etc.

The ticket boxes are ticketek branded so that reasoning is flawed.. Lets say that the staff are payed $16 an hour, they need to sell 2 tickets to recoup this "cost" as you put it. The rest of the money they make in that time is to pay for after work drinks?!?

It is taking advantage, or so I think. The point is, had I been aware it would cost more to get them (remember ticket offices at the stadium were open all day) from the stadium outlet I would have gone to the store in town..

The game started at 7pm and I bought them at 4.30pm, they changed the price after 2pm..

If you don't like it, buy your ticket early

That goes without saying, the question is - Is this practice fair!? You couldn't do it at a retail store with a product you had advertised that was proving popular, so why can you do it with event tickets?

So you think the only price of having staff is what they are paid, that they have to pay nothing for the facilities, the equipment onsite etc, rent, etc.

Very simplistic view of business IMO.

The reason they charge more is because they CAN - you are already there, you have probably paid for parking already so have a decent investment in going. If you dont like that, move to cuba or somewhere else communist where making a profit is frowned upon.

I was merely placing the same rationale as the poster above me had used. Besides you readily agree that the reason they do "is because they CAN"

My question was and always has been - do you think its fair?

Yes it is fair. The price of something is set by the market. If they were charging you more after saying it was a different price it would be false, but they are not doing that so its fair.

The price was not set by the market, it was set by ticketek who changed their price on the day.. Supply and demand only occurs when one is less than the other, not when neither has changed...

I dont disagree that it is legal, I am was putting foward a point of discussion as to decide if one thinks its fair, clearly not worthy of proper thought!!

As another point let it be known that they are now advertising the point that they increase the price at the venue on the day!! That was not their 4 days ago

On a slighty different angle - Were the tickets $8 dollars cheaper to buy before 2pm and after that were being sold at there normal price or was the cheaper price the normal price and the additional $8 a simple price hike.

Opps answered my own question, from the Ticketek website;

"Pre purchase and save up to $8 per ticket on the gate price. "

So what are we complaning about again?

Having been involved with setting up a concert where the conditions of the venue hire dictated that Ticketek was used for all ticket sales, I can tell you that the increase in prices for gates sales will have been set by Cricket NZ (whatever the correct name is), not by Ticketek. It does seem an unusual practice though - I mean you wouldn't expect it at a concert or a show.

Not true. Door sales are quite often more than prepurchased tickets, e.g. BDO, dance parties, especially smaller gigs. It's to guarantee a certain level of attendance I suppose. If you think you can save a few dollars by prebuying, then you're more likely to turn up on the day.

It;s not so much that they raise the price on game day, it;s that you get a discount by buying early.

Every event manager will want to sell tickets as far in advance as possible so they can make the best plans for staffing needs, food and beverage stock etc etc.
So they price the tickets cheaper ahead of time so that they can get a good handle on how much they need to do.

sell cheap tickets first to make sure you cover your costs, then make profit on the day.

It's not reeally any different from airlines putting the price up on their flights nearer the time.
